That socialism is great because it is a way of aiming society as a whole towards filling human need and eliminating human poverty, and thus removes the strain that altruism has on the individual. Nobody has claimed to have achieved full communism, or moved beyond the stage of socialism. Only non-communists have claimed that certain nations have been a "pure" version of socialism to denigrate all communists and socialists by association.

What a weird scenario. In a communist society you would just build them a house if they needed it and one was not available. You wouldn't have to go through all the red tape and market speculation on whether a house would be profitable; you would just build it as soon as it was clear that there was a need for it. And even then that's a really unlikely scenario, unless the US goes through a huge population boom in the next 40 years. There is so much empty housing in america that a large chunk of the american homeless population could be made to disappear just by making use of it.
