Britain was a country that probably contributed the most to 2004 enlargement of the EU in which post-communist Eastern European countries joined, in hopes that this will promote the Atlanticist and laissez-faire approach to the Union.

British government decided to fully open its labour market to citizens of new members and to not implement any temporary restrictions, unlike almost all other old EU countries.

This lead to sudden and steady immigration from Eastern Europe, which strengthened already emboldened euroscepticism in the UK.

A little bit ironic, don't you think?

I don't know what the hell they were bitching about

they were never really in the EU, always the special snowflake with special privileges

>I don't know what the hell they were bitching about

I'm not bitching, just pointing out this colossal miscalculation of Blair's government

Ironic indeed.

And now UK will leave EU only to lose their vote on important matters but they will still have to contribute money and allow freedom of movement.

Also UK will balkanize and in 10 years England will come back and will have to adopt the €.

- Minister, Britain has had the same foreign policy objective for at least the last five hundred years: to create a disunited Europe. In that cause we have fought with the Dutch against the Spanish, with the Germans against the French, with the French and Italians against the Germans, and with the French against the Germans and Italians. Divide and rule, you see. Why should we change now, when it's worked so well?
- That's all ancient history, surely?
- Yes, and current policy. We 'had' to break the whole thing up, so we had to get inside. We tried to break it up from the outside, but that wouldn't work. Now that we're inside we can make a complete pig's breakfast of the whole thing: set the Germans against the French, the French against the Italians, the Italians against the Dutch... The Foreign Office is terribly pleased; it's just like old times.
- But surely we're all committed to the European ideal?
- Really, Minister.
- If not, why are we pushing for an increase in the membership?
Sir Humphrey: Well, for the same reason. It's just like the United Nations, in fact; the more members it has, the more arguments it can stir up, the more futile and impotent it becomes.

Sorry, didn't read that properly

>I don't know what the hell they were bitching about
>they

Because Labour was in power and they hate white British people

Heeelllo, my name is Nigel Farage.

I am the unelected leader of Little England and I have come to Brussels today with my chum Michael Gove to negotiate our exit from the EU. Since you all have never had a proper job in your lives this should be an easy task. We demand to leave with full access to your markets. Don't bother sending us any more Polish refugees as my poster campaign outlined, please do however carry on with the delivery of socialist French agricultural produce, most notably the nice bubbly that you chaps make, we love it.

Please, my fellow Europeans, remember the pledges we made to our people, we need back £350 million per week which we never paid to you anyway but let us not quarrel about that, go on, please do start setting up that direct debit.

You now pay us.

You see, we are leaving and to make sure we do you would need to pay us those sums now. If you did not, then
we wouldn't be able to save our NHS or build more re-education camps for foreigners (lesson one: the constitution and democratic mandate) and many other relevant things we care about so much. And by God, if the people found out these cobbled together promises were all lies then the mob would demand a recount, and we know Mr Juncker and Mr Schulz and Mr Hollande do not want that, they said they want us out as soon as.

Deal?

Yours truly,
Nigel F.

There are no positives to a united Europe. The society of European nations, just like the society within each European nation, functions best when each individual acts in their own rational self-interest. The EU, and an 'ever closer union', works against this fact. A disunited Europe is in fact the strongest kind of Europe.

Euroscepticism versus Europhilia is just a particular incarnation of individualism versus collectivism.

So we should just give in to anarchy?

Nice leap of logic

It's nationalism versus globalism and nationalists tend to be more collectivist.

Divided Europe worked very well in the past. Only two world wars, what a success!

Was it possible for Europe to just have a common market without Europe's leaders viewing said common market as a mandate to establish a future United States of Europe?

Nope

i'm of the opinion that the eu is cool as a way to make travel between the nations easier (and perhaps connecting the markets of similarly productive countries, none of this germany -> poland bullocks), but turning it into some superstate is a mistake imo

Why did this need to be moved to Sup Forums?

I don't know

Too many threads about Brexit, perhaps?

If it's from /his/ the mods frown upon threads about things in the last 25 years, especially if its political shit.

Nope, it's from Sup Forums.

No, it was on Sup Forums

They pushed for expansion into the former warsaw pact, they fucked us over just to hop out.

IS NO ONE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THESE UNKNOWN FLAGS???????????????????????

they don't take the data of where the posters posted from when they move a thread desu
