Mulroney is almost singularly to blame for the state of the CPC. He was a real piece of shit.

Prior to Mulroney, the CPC was an actual Red Tory/Blue Tory party. It had a Red Tory wing that advocated centre-left economic policies, respect for institutions, and a conservative immigration and foreign policy (ie. don't go around bombing everyone, don't let 1,000,000 people into the country) and a Blue Tory section that basically advocated centre-right economic policies and no social interference by state.

Then Mulroney came along and advocated faggot Thatcherite/Reaganite neoliberal trade and foreign policies, leading to more immigration and the insistence on "government is only here to take care of big business lol." After Mulroney, the remaining social conservative/economic libertarian element (the far right wing of the Blue Tories) formed Reform, and the others formed the Alliance. Finally Harper and McKay killed the Red Tories off for good with the CPC merger process and at the same time gutted all of Reform. So now we just have neoliberals.

tl;dr fuck Mulroney, worst prime minister ever. Clark and Diefenbaker were too socially liberal for Sup Forums's liking, but at least they weren't fucking traitors.

NAFTA was pretty much the nail in the coffin. I also forgot to mention that Trudeau Sr. is probably tied for first place on the shitlist because of the Charter. It might seem like a decent idea on the surface, but it basically led to the abuse of judicial review and the institutionalization of affirmative action. The BNA Act/Canada Act would have been a fine constitutional document on its own.

I think the cons have been using it ironically to mock trudeau. I hope they are at least.

That's true. But it's not like the Charter actually fixed any of that (QC didn't even sign it). Those should have been dealt with through a Royal Commission, Senate committees, and acts of Parliament and the National Assembly, or something similar. Perhaps a referendum in QC about whether or not to accept the proposed changes, whatever they would be.

As it is, nobody in politics wants to actually fix the constitution (and if they did, they'd probably cuck it up hard) so we're just wrapping the bandage in more and more cloth, hoping that the wound goes away
