I'm not defending the movie, because it sucks, but I find it funny how this kind of thing backfires on idiots such as op (not that the directors/writers aren't idiots either).
First you create some situation on the limit, then you have this story trying to show that last drop and the protagonist tipping over. If they used something big, it would defeat the purpose that "it only takes that one small thing", but because they use something small, idiots go "whoa, was it all just for that tiny thing?"
