nah, it's a tribute to the mother's family, which may or may not have any boy. Since it is the second to last name, it does not pass on a second time, anyway. This has been a thing for a very long time now (like century old).
In other times, only nobility had family names, so it was custumary to pass all the family names from both parents, which resulted in long names (since many of those were common to both parents it wasn't as bad as you may think). For some reason brazileans still do this to a degree
