Retirement aged man with no savings, investments, pension or assets demands special treatment from the state. Be amazed at his fight against publicly funded services while using publicly funded services to protest against them. Observe our hero as he is abusive to multiple members of government staff and the unrealistic reactions of the general population. An absolute must watch for the modern champagne socialist labour party supporter. BONUS: Absolutely no social commentary on immigration.
Bravo Loach

Ken Loach is a prototypical moaning old left wing bellend
fuck him and fuck his oh-so-easy emotionally driven envy politics

this scene
awful awful film and summed up by this one scene
so two tramps start vandalising public property and the general public start cheering them on and start booing when he's arrested. Its meant to be a feel good, poignant moment but its so disconnected from reality. Does Ken Loach ever leave the house?
Jason Turner
Why didn't the job center just give him a benefits?

Yeah man, fuck that guy.

so I just had a heart attack and can't work because my fibromyalgia Oh and now my car doesn't work Oh would you look at that a tree fell through my home Oh man, my insurance check for both the house and the car didn't get mailed since the Tories cut $100k of funding to the Royal Mail and so now I'm totally uninsured! I sure wish I could work.. but... maybe there's an office job! Oh wait I'm computer illiterate and all I've been doing the last 30 years is laying concrete and the remaining 16 hours a day I just fill time with whatever. Fucking Tory scum I can't believe this government agency is deciding my gibs on a questionnaire rather than just how pitiful I look! I'll show them die from shitty heart from working as a construction laborer for 45 years making no advancement in life or career RIP don't forget to vote Labour
Bentley Jones
The fault in the system is that he didn't have any savings, investments, assets or pension. I mean I'm 25 and I'm saving money for a rainy day, shit happens. Our hero Daniel Blake was what 55 and still living in a council house despite the fact he worked all his life? That's the real fault
That is ultimately his fault and the question should be how do we incentivise behaviours which would lead to the things I wrote above.
Basic economics
Adam Morris
What's the point in being a nation state if you can't look after a 60 year old man with a heart condition? What's the point in being a nation state if you can't look after any of your citizens with dignity? Nationalists are some of the biggest dullards to have ever existed.
William Clark
That's the thing, you absolutely can. This film is a characature of incompetence from every angle, and displays the state as heartless while completely ignoring Daniel Blakes a moron with no long term planning skills.
You're insane if you think this is in any way close to real life. It's just lefty propaganda.
Zachary Russell
kek
he was also living in a council house for 30 years, blocking more needy people to use it. the 'right wing' version of Daniel Blake would be him renting out his spare room to a lodger and the climax would be replacing the washing machine

What's the point of savings and pensions if the states just going to take care of you anyways?

Believe it or not, there's been very few periods in our history where we have had what we now call "full employment". Not through the Medieval, Victorian or 20th century. It is mostly a myth propped up now with insecure shit employment.
If you've ever lived in a council estate you would know that it reflects this point even more, generations going back through where anyone who couldn't work in a coal mine or major factory would never have full work. Those thing are gone now and its using unrealistic standards to treat people who look to the state as idiots.
Besides, Loach has no obligation to please the rightwingers who are so obsessed with impartiality that it has ruined our media and culture. He can tell whatever story he wants.
Landon Turner

Social housing is a failed system, and its mainly because of the 1977 housing act, which specifically reserves it for the 'neediest'. That means, in areas of high demand at least, that anybody with a job is automatically disqualified. Instead of a virtuous cycle where the state builds housing to help meet demand, and uses the rental income to fund maintenance and more building, we have a system where the least deserving chunk of the population is gifted a home for life at a steep discount (most of whom have their rent paid by housing benefit anyway), and the rental income can't even cover basic upkeep because it's so low. Meanwhile, working people pay an arm and a leg for substandard accommodation. When my girlfriend moved to London, she and her flatmates were paying £30-40 grand a year between them for a home that their neighbours got for £6 grand of housing benefit a year. I know a couple who work full time trying to raise their child, one of whom is in a pretty senior position in a massive international company, and they live next door to a man and his son who sit around smoking weed and listening to music all day in an identical flat owned by the council. Social housing is the primary symbol of how utterly broken our system is, because it hands a better life to people who don't work than those who do.
Easton Brooks
> He can tell whatever story he wants
no ones saying he cant but this film is notable for how well received it is and how black and white it is. you know who the baddies and goodies are but the situation is far more complicated than the film lets on
lets use Wolf of Wall Street as a 'right wing capitalist' film to contrast. Imagine if it was filmed with the government agent as unequivocally the bad guy. You root for (or dont root for) Jordan Belfont because of your own biases and prejudice, Scorcese doesn't TELL you to like him but most people do.
Adrian Cook
>everybody has the same opportunities as me and if they reach an older age without any savings it surely is their own (and solely theirs) fault and I have nothing to do with it because free market is literally perfect

Why didn't Ken Loach direct a film starring a homeless man dying of pneumonia as he waits for a council house while a carpenter lives alone in a council house for 30 years despite being in a trade with fairly high pay and being completely able to have rented privately?
Because it wouldn't fit his bullshit world view
Elijah Long
>im too stupid to save money or take care of myself so rich people should do it for me, for free

>50 year old single man with no overheads or family is utterly incapable of saving money
I don't even give a fuck if you think I'm some kind of rabid an-cap, if you reach 50 and have no savings, family and still living in a council house you're better off dead.
Justin Wood
so you're as retarded as I posited in my previous post?

I have nothing against plebs accepting state sponsored charity. I say charity as that's what it is. Benefits is a misnomer - it's not a benefit, as there is no benefit to anyone. The poor are encouraged to stay poor, at everyone else's expense.
What I object to is dole scum not feeling the appropriate amount of shame for accepting this charity. Daring to use it as a life style choice to engender their own laziness, rather than using it how it should be used, a stop gap between employment.
Luke Cruz

>The state should pay me for existing just like my parents do
Oh God I wish we could just put millenials in camps.
Gavin Green
Social housing is failed system I agree there but remember 50% of what was sold off in Thatchers scheme is now privately rented.
Another problem is the failure of free-market economics. We now have a situation where building firms can bypass creating a percentage of a affordable housing set by local government because by law they have to be guaranteed a 20% profit on an investment. What is the point in private business when they are so heavily subsidized by the state in business and are not taking risks. Savings didn't do well with inflation and the amount people who encouraged to invest in British shares that collapsed.
Isaac Hughes
>le millenials how old are you? chances are you're a millenial too

Wonder how many of people here actually watched the film. As you all busy individuals know, reading wikipedia is faster, and makes you available to engage in very important political discussion right away .

>Scorcese doesn't TELL you to like him but most people do. Carpenters don't live hand to mouth. It's a skilled profession and if you've been doing it you're entire life you should be at a level where you're making 50k+ a year. Either that or you could start your own business quite simply.
You shouldn't be in a council house relying on the state for gibs.
But say he has decided to do nothing by it spend his cash on Tennants Super and Kebabs, why is it the states job to bend rules to suit him. If he would have had his hearing (which would have cost the tax payer thousands and him nothing, btw) he would have been 'entitled' to his charity. It's just the way it was written that he died early. There are rules in place for a reason, and when you're basically giving the lazy money for mearly existing then you want to have a pretty water tight system in place, wouldn't you agree?
Lincoln Wilson

on fucking what? caviar? Its said repeatedly in the film he has NOTHING. He was on 25-30k for 30 years paying minimal fucking rent and he had nothing.
Savings for short-medium term financial emergencies, like i don't know if you had to go off work for a few months because of a health condition, do just fine with inflation
highly stylised but wolf of wall street is actually fairly realistic. More realistic than people applauding tramps for vandalising property anyway
Angel Lopez
So the right are so concerned with the homeless now? The question is why not both these men as the character in loaches film has quite clearly suffered of low skill employment, a heart attack and a widower. That's because it doesn't suit your bulshit world view. Although it seems a confused world view whatever it is with the contradiction I pointed out

It's not the best work from Loach, but it is a pretty good movie. I'm not currently in the "protagonists" position, but this is a relevant financial position for a lot of people, can't afford to save, live hand to mouth more or less etc.
I do expect to be in this guys position though, I'm in a mid-income job, but rent is insane, I could afford to save, but then I'd have to stay at home and do nothing all the time. Retirement age looks to be going up to 75, as someone that's middle aged I will literally work until I die.

Thatcher sold off council houses to the people that rented them. At a massively discounted rate depending on how long they lived there. It literally made hundreds of thousands of people who otherwise would have never been able to own a house home owners.
Say what you will, but maybe people shouldn't just aspire to live at the expense of the state and actually want to better themselves.

As I've said previously, not every person comes from your middle England background and its repeatedly the blindside of Conservatives. If the state has done fuck all for you like many Northern communities in regards of infrastructure and work how can they live to your standards? You're failing to understand that we haven't always been this Libertarian dream where every man can be responsible and self sufficient. Most people despise the state, especially local government haha. I work for the local government and understand it far too well. I'd find it hard to respect someone who is paid through my taxes.
Wolf of Wall Street would be the equivalent to Daniel Blake if the characters in Daniel Blake had glossy music montages and were all hilarious.
Nolan Rivera
>h no savings, investments, pension or assets
Yeah and how many people are there just like him right now? Millions. And guess what? The state has to look after them because that's its job.
Young people think they know everything and have it all figured out. Savings won't save you. Investments won't save you. You really think that money will solve everything. Just you wait until the NHS is completely privatised and see how far your savings get you.
You really think the benefits system is ruining this country? It takes up hardly anything of government spending. Don't worry though as long as you have a playstation, your health and your nice zero hours contract job you'll be fine right? Got a student loan? Don't worry soon those will be abolished too.
I cannot wait to leave this fucking country forever. As soon as the pound crashes a bit more I'm making an extra £20k easy and I'm getting the fuck out of here.

Yes and my point was half of those people went on to rent their wonderful new home our to the next sap who has to pay 1000 a month in London. If they're now renting their houses out they must have not needed the opportunity surely? It's almost as it was a conspiracy to strip the state of its property?

What do you actually own? How do we continue with a reasoned discussion until I come to the conclusion that the masses should revolt again. Its one of the few ways rights have been gained through history. This is why politics needs to be a reasoned give and take and I think most of us need that take now.
Juan Ward
Everyone in this thread is cunting about the guy expecting the government to give him £50 quid a week because that's apparently the worst thing in the world a man who can't work any more can do.
When every single britcuck thread here is people going to the jobcentre to collect dole money or what drugs they should buy in uni.
Connor Lee
>infrastructure and work how can they live to your standards?
HE HAD A JOB HIS WHOLE LIFE. Central part of the film. A carpenters wage that's how he should live to my 'standards'
my 90 year old nan learned how to use a computer in about 3 days. people in the shop even came round and set it up for her. she now has a tablet too. Dont think I've ever met anyone in their 50s who has no idea with computers. I'm starting to think Loach is trying to tell the audience that Blake is medically retarded.

So what? Social protection is pretty much the only responsible part of the government.
What is so bad about giving a man who cannot work £50 a week? Did you even watch the film? He'd be working if he could, but he can't and that's wrong?
Tell me, what part of Swindon are you from?
Yes, and isn't it great for your grandfather that he has a support network of family and friends to help him gain that skill, but at the same time, you'd be against a government funded program to help the elderly gain those skills because that would technically be welfare too.
Aaron Russell

LOL, they can't fucking hire them quick enough, there is not enough fucking men for the work which is why they keep importing hard working Polish because lazy cunts like the made up prick in Loaches fake dreamland drama don't exist.
If this fantasy man did exist he would find work before 10am on a Monday morning if he started looking at 9:45am >Multiple experiments with journalists who pretended be near illiterate, no qualifications and been on benefits for like 15 years all found work in around 48 hours
>Reality TV shows featuring benefit scroungers (paid to appear on the show) who complained they couldn't get jobs etc, were given jobs for the show, some never showed up for their first day of work, the rest mostly quit after a few days because it was too hard, one or two stayed working.
These reason these fucking parasites can't find work is because they don't want to.
Jason Bailey
Labour privatised 5% of the NHS, under the stories that number has slightly increased to 7%. If private companies can take over profitable, non-clinical parts of the NHS, like pay roll and cleaning then why shouldn't they?

Good, feel free to fuck off. Scrounger.
Charles Perez
you better be sorry, you fucking nigger
Brody Rivera
Fact is if you go to any job centre you'll see it full of young people who cannot get jobs also claiming benefit, but here you guys are attacking an old man who literally worked and paid tax for 50 years for being a scrounger.
You make me fucking sick.
Anthony Thompson
>those damn class traitors, daring to own their own houses
Is that you Jeremy?

I'm from a poor ex-mining town in Derbyshire. A lot of my mates are working in trades like carpenting. A free market is actually a big help to tradies, because you can quite easily go self employed after a few years and demand your own rates for work. The first few years (especially if you have a shit gaffer) aren't great but if you're a tradie and aren't making decent money by the time you're 30-odd, you're just shit at your job.

If this image is accurate then there is no austerity, as the government is spending more than it makes from its populace.
That's the exact opposite of austerity, its profligacy.
In the future, anyone you hear who says 'austerity' like its an actual thing can be instantly discounted as a retard. What they call austerity is actually fiscal sensibility.
No wonder leftists hate it.

Ssshhhhh, stop breaking their logic.
Why should a man who worked for 50 years, set aside savings, pensions, owning his own house.
I tell you mate, I know several Carpenters and they do very nicely for themselves, then again, they don't spend 100% of their free time dropping all their cash into the bookies and the pub... the scum? (I guess?)

Nice argument :^)

old man had a steady well paying job for 30 years, pissed all his money away on god knows what and now wants to mooch money away from people who cant get jobs at all because a bunch of old geezers like himself are sitting on them

Their not owning their own houses, they're renting them out. Most of the time ripping off desperate people and failing to take up the role as a proper landlord, which should be classed as a full time occupation.
The thing I find revolting about Conservatives is what happened to the incentive to invest your money in British business, to co-own and feel responsible. It went down the shitter when our joke of a housing market became too easy.
Kayden Morales
So you watched Benefits Street and figured that's what the entire country besides you is doing? Don't be a fucking cretin.
And importing hard working Polish? Give me a break, they are hired because predatory companies will use them to pay less. I applaud the Polish for doing the work but I won't praise the business owners who hire them just to save a few quid. You are calling people parasites, how divorced from humanity are you?
Hunter Bennett
He got his basic charity, due to a mix up at the hospital his medical files didn't come through so he was delayed in getting his extra charity. It would have been sorted out at the hearing, unfortunalty he died before the hearing. The state didn't kill him, his heart condition did.
Joseph Anderson

And yet has LITERALLY (and I use the word in the truest sense) has nothing to show for it? No assets? No house he owns? He has literally nothing. How strange?

What's hilarious is that the system is ripe for abuse, if you aren't dumb. Carer's allowance is free money if you happen to know someone who is disabled, you get about the same as jobseekers, except you literally never have to do anything.

no they hire them because they work hard and turn up on time and dont try and fucking screw the employer out of cash at every single opportunity
have you ever met british tradesmen? at least half of them are essentially thieves with endless excuses about why they dont show up on time, why the work isnt done, why it ended up costing twice as much as the estimate etc. there is a reason why people overwhelmingly prefer to use builders and plumbers who are recommended to them by friends or family, because if you take your chances on the open market the chances are high that you will get majorly fucked
Samuel Morales
pls dont use logic on lefties it upsets them. I'm not convinced they know what savings and assets are.
Even at it's most basic level his finances don't make sense. There's a hilarious scene where he pawns off everything he owns and makes about 20 quid. Why didn't he actually buy decent furniture, tools, antiques etc. then sell them privately.
