>Mario Balotelli's only assist in the premier league was the title-winning Aguero goal against QPR

>No country with an incumbent Pope (of their nationality) has ever won the world cup
Watch out Messi

good thread

>Thomas Mueller is Bayern Munich's fourth all time top goal scorer, higher than Lewandowski, Robben, Makaay, Mandzukic, Pizzaro and isn't even top 10 in appearances

Crouch also holds the record for the most substitute appearences in the PL.

During Arsenals infamous 5-1 defeat to Bayern
>Arsenal become the first English club to concede more than 200 goals in the CL
>Xabi Alonso completed more passes than Ozil, Xhaka, Gibbs and Sanchez combined (17)
>Neuer made the same amount of attempted passes as Ozil (20)
>Arsenal failed to win a single tackle
The Invincibles will return to their glory days hopefully

Thanks, please feel free to contribute, I am collecting them from online sources in the hopes they start a discussion

I looked it up, 143 is amazing

Best comment from daily mail:
"We live in a world where crouch has more assist than Scholes, tom cleverly has more Premier league trophies than Gerrard and Scholes has more goals that crouch... Lol"

>During Arsenals infamous 5-1 defeat to Bayern
Which one? There were several

kek. based sudan saving spee one post at a time.

Didn't they lose 5-1 both home and away that season?

thank mr skeltal

>"Chelsea's mascot is a lion taken from their club logos and named Stamford The Lion. In July 2005 the costume was stolen from Stamford Bridge"

Sorry forgot about that, last season Ro16 first leg

Pretty certain it happened the previous season as well, but only in one of the legs.

Being an Arsenal fan is eternal suffering

Which part of Emirates are you from then, lad?

Umm Suqeim, and you?

While on Chelsea, the No9 Curse has claimed the following victims
>Mateja Kezman

>Radamel Falcao
>Alvaro Morata?

>Jari Litmanen is the only player in international footballing history to play across 4 decades, albeit close (1989-2010)

F.C. Barcelona's infamous 11-1 loss to Real Madrid
>"A lot of Real Madrid fans claim that they are the best team ever because they beat Barcelona 11-1 years ago"

>"As for the match, this is what really happened: the first game at Les Corts was won by Barcelona 3–0. Before the second leg, Barcelona’s players had a changing room visit from Franco’s director of state security. He 'reminded' them that they were only playing due to the 'generosity of the regime'. Real Madrid then went on to dominate the match, winning 11–1."

>"In a nutshell, Franco walks in and tells the Barcelona players, 'I am the boss here. It is my generosity by which you are even playing. If you win this match, it will be your last match, because I will have you all killed.' Now tell me, when someone indirectly threatens to kill you and your family, what would you do?"

>
Not sure about this one and '14 but apparently
>"Sergio Batista (1986) and Gennaro Gattuso (2006) are the only 2 players to have won the World Cup while sporting a full beard"

Thank you for adding another sport

Sidwell is more ridiculous than Boozecruise

No offense intended, but why Barcelona fans were once called 'asses' or 'culers'

>The meaning of culé is very simple and interesting at the same time, but we will need to travel in time until 1909 when the matches where played in the stadium located in Industria street in the city. The stadium had a limited capacity, it could accommodate 6000 people. When there were important matches, the stadium was over the capacity and people even sat in the wall beyond the stands.

>These followers who sat on the wall where seated in a way that their ass could be seen from Industria street, in catalan ass is "cul", people who passed by on the street could see their culs. That is why they called them "culers", the ones who showed the ass on the wall, and the word derived to culés as we call them nowadays.

But they've recently made asses out of the biggest teams

Tottenham Hotspur haven’t won a league game at Stamford Bridge since 1990

Apparently he was shipped off to Villa by Avram Grant, and Chelsea has even weirder facts

>Didier Drogba is a certified accountant

Wew, that must suck even more for Arsenal. But they have some good stats

>Only non-league team to win the FA cup (1901)
>First British club to win a major european trophy (Cup Winner's Cup, 1963)
>First team to win the UEFA Cup (1971)
Bad Stats
>"On the very day that Spurs lost their place to Arsenal in the First Division, the club’s pet parrot collapsed and died. The parrot had been a gift from a ship’s captain as the team returned from a 1908 tour of Argentina and Uruguay. Some say the phrase ‘as sick as a parrot’ originated from here."
>"The club’s home stadium, White Hart Lane, was originally a disused nursery. The landlord realised the increased revenues he could enjoy if Spurs played their matches behind his pub and the club moved in."

Real Madrid wear white because
>"There are many legends and stories to why Real Madrid C.F. wears white uniforms, but the most popular goes back to the grassroots of soccer in Spain: many boys used to practice in their white undershirts."
They were also the first team to wear numbered shirts (1947)

This is probably fake
>"Ronaldo was popular with other students at school, but he was expelled at the age of 14 after he threw a chair at his teacher. Ronaldo said the reason he did it was because the teacher disrespected him. Despite it being a negative thing, it turned into a great turning point in his life. His mother then encouraged him to focus all his attention on soccer which he did and turned him into an international sensation."
Thank God he did (focus on football not throw the chair)

>"At the age of 15 Ronaldo was diagnosed with a racing heart, a condition that might have forced him to give up playing football. He had an operation in which a laser was used to cauterise the area of his heart that was causing the problem. The surgery took place in the morning and Ronaldo was discharged from hospital by the end of the afternoon; he resumed training only a few days later."
Don't know about this but it was probably unresponsive to medication or the drugs interfered so good choice

Messi had his problems with a deficiency of Growth Hormone, but:
>Newell's Old Boys and River Plate refused to pay the unaffordable 900USD treatments for the 4'2'' Messi, Barcelona famously signed him on a Napkin with agreement to the therapy
>He would have discontinued them after reaching adulthood, but any player can apply for a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) from FIFA to continue it during his/her playing career

>"If for whatever reason, Barcelona decides to cancel their contract with Lionel Messi, they will have to cough up over $330 million for a breach in contract."
(May have been renegotiated)

He shares his birthplace, Rosario, with Che Guevara

>In the wake of the Munich Air Disaster, Real Madrid President Santiago Bernabeu’s respect for Sir Matt Busby and his Manchester United team led to attempts to help rebuild the club following such tragedy.

>They offered holidays to Spain and allowed the use of their facilities for the bereaved, set up cut price annual friendlies to help raise funds, and even offered Argentine legend Alfredo Di Stéfano to the club on loan (the player also agreed but the move was blocked by the FA as it was considered a place that could instead be used by another British player).

>He would have discontinued them after reaching adulthood, but any player can apply for a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) from FIFA to continue it during his/her playing career
>"If for whatever reason, Barcelona decides to cancel their contract with Lionel Messi, they will have to cough up over $330 million for a breach in contract."
lmao who wrote this retarded shit?

>"If for whatever reason, Barcelona decides to cancel their contract with Lionel Messi, they will have to cough up over $330 million for a breach in contract."

Pretty sure to cancel a contract club has to pay the wages for however long the contract would have normally ran for.

>With the exception of Frank O' Farrell (Ireland), Louis Van Gaal is the first foreign manager to take the reigns at Manchester United F.C.

Derby County:
>have the worst top flight season
>have the record FA Cup final defeat
>conceded the first goal in league football

Bleacherreport but I paraphrased it after skimming, reminder for me not to take everything at face value. Is it factually incorrect?

I'll end it with one wackier:
>"With the signings of Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Danilo and Ederson costing them almost £160 million, Manchester City have spent more on defence this summer than 47 actual countries"

Thanks

>Khalid Boulahrouz
I will never not be mad about that
>be defender
>be shit
>take the number 9 for some reason

>Sidwell, Glen Johnson and Scott Parker all played for Chelsea
Those were weird days

>is

1957-58 was the final season with Division 3 being separated into North and South. Of the 24 teams in the North, 12 are no longer league clubs whilst only 2 of the 24 southern teams are out of the league.

shot nerves m9, speech embarrassment issues IRL with English

>Is it factually incorrect?
messi having a lifelong TUE for growth hormone is false (and probably deadly)

the contract part is 'true' (not sure about the concrete number), but it applies to every contract in the world: you can't cancel a contract unilaterally, so you have to pay it in full if you want to break it. If you cancel iwobi's or negredo's contract you also have to pay it in full, it's not some special messi clause

Cricket test matches are currently limited to lasting 5 days but in the early 20th century some matches had no limit, playing until there was a result. The last one was playing in South Africa in 1939 and had to be abandoned after 12 days because England would have missed their boat home.

No he most definitely did, after arriving at adulthood, the growth plates (metaphyses) close and the fibroblasts/chondrocytes wouldn't be nearly as susceptible to HGH, fucked it up royally with the wording

The contract part like the Finnbro said is because of my ignorance of the sport

Kevin Garnett played against both Magic Johnson and D'Angelo Russell, born 37 years apart.

>messi has been taking growth hormone for almost 20 years under a TUE
lmao

Another NBA longevity one. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played against Bob Cousy (drafted 1950) and against Kevin Willis (retired 2007).

So there was an opponent of Kareem in the NBA for 57 straight seasons.

'No he most definitely did', as in he definitely stopped. There is no point in Growth Hormone supplementation beyond adulthood for him, the growth plates like I said are closed

>(and probably deadly)
It isn't, Lance did it with EPO. Elevated levels can be deadly but produce diseases like acromegaly

>In the 2013/14 EPL season, Liverpool spent the most days in 1st position, than any other club, without winning it.

EPL is not, nor has ever been a proper name for the league

ahh sorry, misunderstood

also, if he had a lifelong TUE we would be hearing it every day from rivals because it would be cheating

>but produce diseases like acromegaly
yeah, this was what I expected. I wonder if it would also boost any cancerous cells and cause all sorts of tumoral growths, or cause organs to grow too much

>The Roman Emperor Commodus collected all the disabled and little people he could find and ordered them to fight each other to the death with meat cleavers in the Colosseum.

I know one similar from down here

> Boca was on the verge of winning three leagues in a row for their first time ever in 2006.
> And they actually kept the lead for the whole tournament (19 rounds) but since the Apertura/Clausura system doesn't consider goal difference, they had to play a tie-breaker.
> They lost and managed to not win a tournament they leaded from the first to last minute.

You made a very good assumption, research focusing on one of its mediators, IGF-1 agrees with you:

uq.edu.au/news/article/2017/10/researchers-show-growth-hormone-signalling-increases-cancer-risk

You have a future in medical research

They won it that season though

Michael Ballack was one of 4 footballers to finish runner up in 4 different competitions across the space of several months for Bayer Leverkusan and Germany in 2002

Alot of people know this, but I'll throw it out there anyway.

>The most lopsided college football game in history was between Georgia Tech and Cumberland college (which doesn't actually exist anymore if I remember correctly), in which the final score of this game ended 222-0 on favor of Georgia Tech.

>On September 25, 1884, Yale defeated Dartmouth 113–0, becoming not only the first game where one team scored over 100 points but also first time one team scored over 100 points and the opposing team scored zero points. The next week, Princeton outscored Lafayette by 140 to 0.

>Of all the instances in college football when a team scored more than 100 points, the "least" lopsided instance of these occurrences was in 1968 when North Park beat North Central 104-32

If the thread is alive later, I'll try to find some more in various sports. I like this thread alot OP

Man, the Vizekusen season was so damn great, right behind the "master of hearts" season for >Schalke.

Ronaldo didnt score in his first 28 champions league matches

wtf i love sudan now

> Marius Hiller is both Argentina NT's best goal ratio and Germany NT's youngest scorer ever.

epis ladbible

>in 1998 Ion Radu was sold from Jiul Petrosani(2nd tier) to FCM Ramnicu Valcea(2nd tier) for 500 kilos of pork

>in 2006 it happened a-fucking-gain Marius Cioara was transferred for 15 kilos of pork sausage from 2nd division side UTA Arad to 4th division team Regal Horia

>same fucking year Cristian Balgradean was sold by 2nd division side Minerul Lupeni to their top tier neighbours Jiul Petrosani for a methane gas line worth 200k $

This is a bit more personal
>uncle was a 2nd and 3rd division tier footballer
>finished his career in the 5th tier league
>they were playing at home against some team from the other side of the county
>they are late to the match
>like 30-40 minutes late
>finally a skeleton team shows up consisting of 7 players and the coach
>their bus broke down on the way to the match and they had to hitchhike since the driver got drunk on rakia and was singing partisan songs in a ditch by the time the mechanic showed up and no one else had the license to drive the bus
>they don't have enough players to field so the home team agrees to lend them some players to field, including my uncle
>around the end of the first half my uncle is fouled in the box and decides he should take the penalty
>he misses, for the 1st time in his career(or so he says)
>by the time the 2nd half is underway the rest of the away team shows up, a couple of them on fucking bikes they burrowed, one riding across the field on a horse even
>my uncle goes back to playing for his team
>towards the end of the match his team gets a penalty
>he takes it, and decides to shoot far and wide to make it fair

tl: dr: my uncle missed two penalties in one match for 2 different teams

I probably should have added
>Marius Cioara ended his career and fled the country in shame after the transfer was leaked to the press

Kek this personal story reminded me of my cousin who played as a pro in Finnish and Swedish top tiers. Got really drunk at our family cabin, stept on a broken bottle and had to miss games because of that. Was reported in the media as "mystical foot injury".

I thought this was a fun fact thread rather than a family stories but if that's the case then my uncle has 99 ban for hitting a ref

Tbf Johnny Foreigners have to specify that the league is English.

Go on

>guy in my old gym my hit a ref on purpose in a boxing fight
>banned for life
ay

No much left to tell, he was a third division literally who that didn't even speak spanish, punched the ref really bad in the facd and is still at his 56th year of ban. Maybe if he reaches 124 years old he may retire with dignity.

It’s a story that changes depending on whoever’s telling it, but the basic facts remain the same: In 1967, Notre Dame freshman quarterback Joe Theismann (pronounced THEES-min) became Joe Theismann (THIGHS-min). It was part of a bid to get Heisman Trophy voters to think of the quarterback with the rhyming last name. It almost worked — in 1970, Theismann finished second to Stanford QB Jim Plunkett in the voting.

Not wanting to be compared to the other John Holmes (a porn star), the young golfer changed his name to J.B.

In college, future Dolphin Sharmon Shaw, a Muslim, received the name Karim Abdul-Jabbar from his Imam. But the NBA's Kareem sued the tailback -- also using No. 33 -- and won a lawsuit forcing him to change his name on the grounds that he was profiting off someone else's identity. His name was changed to Abdul-Karim Al-Jabar

>"Dios" Bojan
10/10 pic.

I love how they had to include that he was "popular with his classmates" despite it being completely irrelevant to the rest of the fact.

The Scottish Cup is the oldest trophy in football. It has been awarded to the winner of the competition every season since 1874.

On the left is Vale of Leven winners in 1876, and on the right Celtic holding the same trophy in 2017

>>The most lopsided college football game in history was between Georgia Tech and Cumberland college (which doesn't actually exist anymore if I remember correctly), in which the final score of this game ended 222-0 on favor of Georgia Tech.

Scotland football didn't stop for WWII?

It did.

That's hilarious, but I'm glad he got killed by Russell Crowe.

Fa cup is older

Please keep this thread alive.

India qualified for the 1950 World Cup but FIFA didn’t allow them to play because they wanted to play barefoot

Ali Daei of Iran has the all time most international goals at 109 goals in 149 appearances for the Iranian National Team. Giving him an average of 0.73 goals per match.

The second highest is Ferenc Puskas of Hungary with 84 goals in 89 international appearances giving him an impressive goals per match of 0.94.

Oddly enough, players we all know, like Cristiano Ronaldo, Miroslav Klose, Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Didier Drogba, Robbie Keane, etc haven't put up numbers even remotely close to this.

Also, Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan are tied for the most international goals ever scored for the USA, at 57, the former had 141 appearances, while the latter had 157.

1934 and 1938.

Jesus Christ, this is one of the most interesting wikipedia articles I've ever read

On 8 January 2010, the Togo team bus was attacked by gunmen as it travelled to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, killing three and injuring several others. The separatist group Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC) claimed responsibility for the attack. Goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale was reported dead a day after the attack. Such reports were later dismissed by his club GSI Pontivy in a press announcement, stating the player was actually undergoing surgery in South Africa.

Following the bus ambush attack, the Fédération Togolaise de Football stated that they would withdraw from the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations; despite claims that the team had since reversed the decision and would compete "to show our national colours, our values and that we are men" (as announced by Thomas Dossevi), the government later ordered that the team return home.

Following the team's withdrawal, The Confederation of African Football (CAF) banned Togo from participating in the next two editions of the Cup of Nations and fined them $50,000 because of the "decision taken by the political authorities". The CAF executive Committee considered that the Togolese team was in "forfeit notified less than twenty days before the start or during the final competition" (Art. 78 of the Regulations for the Africa Cup of Nations), rather than having withdrawn (Art. 80), and refused to consider the circumstances as force majeure (Art. 87). Togo's government immediately said they would sue as CAF "have no consideration for the lives of other human beings" and this is further "insulting to the family of those who lost their lives and those traumatized because of the attack". FIFA has yet to comment on the issue. Togo footballer Thomas Dossevi said "We are a group of footballers who came under fire and now we can't play football any more. They are crushing us". Togolese captain Emmanuel Adebayor described the decision as "outrageous" and said that CAF President Issa Hayatou had "completely betrayed" the Togo squad.

On 7 September 2010, Togo allegedly played Bahrain in a friendly losing the match 3–0. However, on 14 September, the Togo FA claimed that a fake team had played against Bahrain. Togo's Sport Minister Christophe Tchao said to the Jeune Afrique magazine that nobody in Togo had "ever been informed of such a game".[13] On 20 September 2010, it was revealed that former Togo manager Bana Tchanilé was the culprit and the Togo FA have given him a three-year ban in addition to the two-year ban he got in July 2010 for taking Togo players to play a tournament in Egypt.[14] The match fixing has been linked to Wilson Raj Perumal and the Singaporean match-fixing syndicate allegedly run by Tan Seet Eng.[15]

No it's not

It's had about 5 different trophies

>we're supposedly living in a modern world
>massively obvious shit like this still happens
fuck is wrong with us?

>tfw you see your club in one of these threads and its all bad.

Yep that's us! (Still won that game in the very first round of fixtures)

How many of Lewandowski, Robben, Makaay, Mandzukic, Pizzaro are even in the top 10 in appearances? How many of them have more games than Müller?

Gerard Piqué and Xabi Alonso on 2010.
Maybe Mata also.
