they used to be their own thing but they got heavily Rus'd and now they're basically just a mini-Russia with an even more authoritarian government stuck in the 1990s in terms of development.

Hm.

Heirs to the Principality of Polotsk that originated from Kievan Rus'

As a "greek" you should know better. Of course we know 50% of Euro flag posters aren't European at all so...

They are mixed. Poles + east slavs + lithuanians.

They have their own language but they don't speak it

Belarusian is much closer to Polish and Ukrainian

>Can Russian and Belarusian speakers understand each other when speaking their own languages?
Not really, only around 30% of the words are intelligible.

Imprisoned and brainwashed Europeans.

I see. Thanks!

Linguistics/Lexical distance.

The absolute state of norwegian bantz

The common misconception of Belarus being "some kind of Russia" comes from the word Rus (Rus', Ruś, Ruthenia) itself.
Before Muscovy transformed into Russia, the whole area of Eastern Europe was filled with various regions named Rus. There was Red Ruthenia, Black Ruthenia, White Ruthenia, and few others. "Bel" means "white", so the state of Belarus is named directly after the historical region of White Rus, not after Russia.

I call bullshit on this one, Slovak language is far more understandable for me than Czech is.
