1. Your cunt 2. How would you translate these names in your language (sticking mostly to royal names since these are often translatable):
1. Portugal
2. John - João Jack - Tiago Francis - Francisco Edward - Eduardo/Duarte Charles - Carlos Herman - Fernando Henry - Henrique Louis - Luís Philip - Filipe(Pt)/Felipe(Br/old Pt) Ferdinand - Fernando Richard - Ricardo Julius - Júlio Elizabeth - Elisabete/Isabel Mary - Maria Anne/Ann - Ana
Luis Gutierrez
Also Michael - Miguel Peter - Pedro Joseph - José
Gavin Hernandez
>Jack - Tiago What? How? Jack is a variation of john.
Adam Johnson
Jack = Jacques, right?
A corruption of "Saint Jacques" in Galician/Portuguese/Castillian is Santiago, which we shortened to just "Tiago"
Or am I thinking of James?
Joshua Sanchez
John - Johann Jack - Jo Francis - Frank Edward - Eduard Charles - Karl Herman - Hermann Henry - Heinrich Louis - Luís Philip - Phillip Ferdinand - Ferdinand Richard - Richard Julius - Julius/Julian Elizabeth - Elizabeth Maria- Maria Anne/Ann - Anne/Anna Michael - Michael Peter - Peter Joseph - Joseph/Josef

>Tiago and Thiago are variant of Diego and in English James, a variant of Jacob.
Yup, you're right. Both "Diogo" and "Tiago" trace back to James, not Jack. My bad.
Ayden Roberts

obviously it's Luis and not Luís
Jaxon Jackson
It's from an old screenshot of an English guy implying Portugal had no history or culture being replied back with a wiki article on how Portugal's Catherine of Bragança introduced tea to the UK, I think.
Nothing wrong with banter, desu.

Thanks Now, how do you go from Herman to Fernando? What's going on there?

Fernando comes from Ferdinand, which might be related to Herman, but if so, the corruption happened somewhere else. I meant to correct it to Ferdinand, but I forgot to come back to it.
Either way, it's the closest name we've got to Herman, but I don't think it has to do with the Spanish conversion of F to H in a lot of words (like Ferro -> Hierro)
Ryder Long
>Eslovenia We also call you Eslovénia. I thought that using an E before the SL in a lot of English words came from us (Iberians) like in most cases, but glad it stays close to the original in this instance.
Also, stop pointing out my mistakes, Ecuador.
Logan Hall
I was curious because we have Hernán here, but i don't know if it's related or just coincidence (though they probably just come from some latin name). I was just curious portubro, sorry :(
Ethan Morgan
John - jean Jack - jacques Francis - François Edward - Edouard Charles - same Herman - ??? Henry - same or henri Louis - same Philip - Philippe Ferdinand - same Richard - same Elizabeth - Elisabeth, isabelle I guess Mary - Marie Anne - same
Isaiah Foster
It's quite alright. It may be obvious that I worked the list from Portuguese to English and just switched them last minute.
We only have Herman as a foreign name here, but I dunno. It might have just fallen in disuse over the time (we have a famous comedian called Herman José, but he had German parents). Do you guys have Hernando AND Fernando, or just one of them?
Sometimes it's hard to make these lists because the bifurcation might come from the other side. We have both Tiago, Diogo and Jacob (the latter being rarer), and both James and Jack seem similar. I know Jack is now a name on its own right and as a diminutive of John, but did it start from Jacob and got mis-placed, I wonder?

I like that John is so ubiquitous.
João, Juan, Jean, John all seem reasonable (all likely influenced by French?), but then you start getting Johann, Hans, Ivan, Giovanni and increasingly weirder ones you get.

We have both Fernando and Hernando. I also remembered now that we have Germán, which sounds about the same as Herman, but i wouldn't know if it has any relation to germans. It's probably related to Germaine in France.
I'm speculating here, but i think Jack just comes from the french Jacques (which probably came from Jacob), since the englosh did borrow a lot of words and names from the french, and both are pronounced the same. I think the relation between John and Jack came from the dual french name Jean Jacques. Jacques was probably downgraded to a version of John due to the dual name not being adopted.
I think Tiago is related to our Santiago, don't you think? Santiago probably started as San(saint) Tiago, and got united later. It shows in how the spaniards used to name cities. Mine for example is named San Gregorio de Portoviejo; other cities like Santiago de Chile may have started as San Tiago de Chile

Well, Im pretty sure when you mean translate, you mean the way you'd pronounce the name in your /lang/'s orthogrophy. So, I'll do that: (C's are pronounced as Ч or Ц) John - Cân Jack - Câhk Francis - Pirancis/Piransis(???) Edward - Etowârt Charles - Cârals Herman - Hirmân Henry - Henrîy/Henirîy Louis - Lô-is/Lô-âs Philip - Pilip (i guess?) Ferdinand - Pirtînânt (?) Richard - Rîcart Julius - Colîyôs Elizabeth - Elicâpet Mary - Mârîy/Marîy Anne/Ann - Ân Michael - Mayikâl Peter - Pîter Joseph - Cosep Obviously, this isn't the way people would spell/pronounce them, they'd just say it in english. I'm just experimenting on how I'd spell it with Cree orthography if it was in a Cree book or something.
