>Scorses: If you go back and look at the contemporary reactions to any Kubrick picture (except the earliest ones) you'll see that his films were initially misunderstood. Then, after five or ten years came the realization that 2001 or Barry Lyndon or The Shining was like nothing else before or since.
Could this be said about any modern working director and his films right now? If so, who?

George Lucas.

Michael bay

The Shining is actually trash. The other two are good

Nocolas Winding Refn (Valhalla rising, Bronson, Only God Forgives and Neon Demon are all kino)

Zack Snyder

Paul Thomas Andersons late work (Inherent Vice and The Master)

Riddley Scott (Prometheus and The Counselor are masterpieces imo)

refn for sure

You obviously can't speak retrospectively about contemporary filmmakers ya fucking melon

>Zack Snyder
>George Lucas

dont fight it

Carruth

kubrick actually sucks though. his films seem so autistic and sterile

I'm not kidding, take a step back and realize that those names belong to real people who have real lives. They aren't solely Sup Forums memes. They have their own experiences that the bring to their films.

You need to grow up m8.

You almost had me, and then you said prometheus
Im not even a hater for that film, I enjoyed it bar huge plotholes and dumb characters

Inherent vice and the Master are his best I agree. Everything else before fell far short, Magnolia was trash and u haven't seen Boogie nights

Is this where plebs list of their favorite pleb trash??

Plot isn't relevant.
Prometheus creates an atmosphere through Scott.
Enjoy film for the world it creates, not the story it tells.

Different day, same faggot trying to convince everyone that Prometheus was actually good.

Please sign up for a Sup Forums gold account, and then promptly delete your account.

Why do you fucking force the discussion down to this level.
Just be civil, jesus.

Boogie Nights is great until the end when it gets a bit hamfisted.

Still, one of his best

Yeh Prometheus is very much a film i learned to enjoy for the visuals and atmosphere, the actual writing is complete dildos.

>plebs actually think they're patricians for parroting this around

>Plot isn't relevant.
plot is always relevant
>Prometheus creates an atmosphere through Scott.
yes it does, and then it gets thrown straight out of the window with shit screenplay due to inexplicably dumb character choices and shithead plotholes

You don;t fucking understand, Im in the minority where I can say I watched prometheus and was actually entertained, but the film has shocking flaws
stop being a faggot

I don't think i'm anything m8. I just got drawn into the world.
Calm down.

Terrence Malick

>and then it gets thrown straight out of the window
Not at all. The narrative is bumpy, but Scott's visual style is on point throughout the film.

>plot is always relevant
No what is relevant is determined by the aspects and preferences an individual viewer tends to focus on and value greatest.

>Not at all. The narrative is bumpy
the narrative is flawed, there is more consistency in fucking little nicky.
Just because you choose not to see flaws doesn't mean they dont exist

Nigger I JUST said that it was bumpy.

What an empty and meaningless thing to say.

IF you are looking at the "understanding" of a film, plot is always relevant you faggot

Not at all.

>Refn
yes
>Snyder
good meme, lad
>PTA late work
Inherent Vice is certainly underrated
>Ridley Scott
The Counselor was woefully misunderstood/underrated. Prometheus is mostly hot garbage.

a bump in a road is completely different to a fucking sinkhole

bumpY
Y
Implies more that one bump!!!!!

THIS

And IF you aren't no it isn't, deal with cunter.

There are some directors praised by non-mainstream critics but disliked by more mainstream ones, like Malick or Mann. I think in the future they will be regarded as one of the best.

So sick of this pomo "subjectivism is truth" bullshit.

Does anyone even know how to build cathedrals anymore?

read the fucking OP again you tard, then leave

>Nocolas Winding Refn (Valhalla rising, Bronson, Only God Forgives and Neon Demon are all kino)

Nobody has misunderstood Refn's work, his pretty imagery and toddler writing have been mentioned countless of times.

rottentomatoes.com/m/spring_breakers_2013/
Korine obviously.

Me desu.

DePalma, definitely. Academics are going to go crazy over him when they find out what they've missed out on.

"All truth is relative, except this one"

There aren't many films that were hated during the premiere and are loved now. Most of them were hated AND loved by some critics during the premiere. It was like that with Kubrick's films.

You're mostly right, but TWBB is probably the best movie of it's decade.

Danny Boyle.

No apologies.

It may have had atmosphere, but it lacked any tension.
Example: that scene when the engineer stalked Shaw after the lifeboat crashed. What Scott should've done is had Shaw go into hiding after David told her he was coming. We then hear the engineer rampaging through the ship without actually seeing him for a couple minutes, before he finds her hiding spot. She manages to slow him down with the axe or something and sprints to the door where the proto-facehugger is. Instead, it just immediately cuts to the engineer breaking in, losing any chance of fear or tension, since you know exactly where the monster is and what the threat is. It just became a chace scene, a short boring one at that

Came here to post Refn. I really hope his films gain more traction in the coming years because if he had the budget to make Neon Demon the way he wanted it would be pure kino.

the most overrated movie of the decade more like

drrAAAAAIINNNNAGE ELI, DRRRRRAINAGE!

memes aside, it really is. Best acting, best cinematography, best writing, it's a near-perfect movie.

Better question: who is the anti-Kubrick? Someone whose work was initially lauded and praised for how revolutionary it was, but in retrospect turned out it wasn't that good.

Tim Burton

>lacked any tension
>losing any chance of fear or tension

You're arrogant, but not as smart as you think you are.

>DePalma,
I was just checking his filmograpgy, it's hard to believe the man who did the Untouchables and Carrie also did the Wise Guys and The Black Dahlia.

Take a look at past Oscar or cannes winners you'd be surprised how many you have never even heard of. Currently people like chazelle Villeneuve or Dolan are fine examples of critics darlings that won't be remembered at all in 10 or 20 years

Critics are shit gobbling redditors.
That's why they rate capeshit always so high.

Those are mostly one-offs anyway. Not directors with a body of work, so to say.

Everything he did in the '80s and '90s was good. his recent films are good too

>not liking The Black Dahlia

>Villeneuve
You're wrong Sicario will be very remembered

Fincher

people like most of his his movies when they come out but they really don't see the all underlying shit until years later

I unironically think that a good few years down the road after the Marvel hype that Batman V Superman will be more liked.

Terrence Malick

Wes Anderson will be understood as the auteur genius he is soon enough

That's a nice picture.
Post more sad Lucas.

He also literally said "Hitler was right about almost everything"

Snyder and Refn.

except he was actually redpiled about jews
he hated their world controlling society

A lot of Lars Von Trier gives me this vibe. Of course he's not on Kubrick's level but shit like Dogville is god tier.

>sad Lucas
I'm fresh out.
Have some cute Lucas.

Kubric was one of the good ones, he tried to warn us

>Dolan

Will be remembered as long as this shithole is around.

He was probably joking. Hitler was wrong about virtually everything.

Daily reminder Prometheus is plebfilter, just like Birdman. If you dislike either you're a fucking pleb

Tell that to David's snapped neck.

t. JIDF

>Birdman
>Liking pretentious shit

>he thinks Birdman is pretentious
>he doesn't see his pleb just for filtered

LOL

>Birdman

Gimmicky but ultimately agreeable because it shits on everyone

>Prometheus

Turd sandwich. Top notch specialists shouldn't act retarded.

>t. JIDF
Historian.

Chazelle is 32
Dolan is 27

They got lot of time to be remembered as most directors peak when they get older

erroneous. erroneous on all counts.

>duh holocaust was real in my mind
>historian

Pleb status: filtered

history is written by the victors
loser :^)

>Diet coke
everytime

Stop. You don't know anything about the holocaust. And Kubrick also said this:
>After Raphael suggested “Schindler’s List,” Kubrick replied, “Think that’s about the Holocaust? That was about success, wasn’t it? The Holocaust is about 6 million people who get killed. ‘Schindler’s List’ is about 600 who don’t. Anything else?”

He who controls the past controls the future, he who controls the present controls the past. Kill yourself you mouth breathing retarded conformist

>muh 6 garillion!
>u dun know nuthin goyim!

Sad JIDF, sad!

Where did you do your historiang? Sweden? hahaha

>it's a DCucks believe their shit movies will be called good ten years from now thread
top kek just give up already

>Nocolas
>Riddley
This is the kind of person who likes Zach Snyder. The kind of person who can't concentrate long enough to communicate their thoughts. Ladies and gentlemen, a moron.

shoo, shill, shoo.
