He would have nailed it. He was one of those actors that hardly required any direction. Just look at all the shitty movies he was in where he acts circles around everyone else.
I think the idea is that by the time LotR came along he was too old and grumpy to do movies he didn't understand anymore. He was just pretty much fed up. Look at Finding Forrester. Probably the best movie he did after The Untouchables (and arguably the last good movie he did at all) and it was a pretty simple, down to Earth story.
