Two and a half shit first seasons and about 7 and a half great seasons

A show that highlighted all of the weird interactions people dealt with in the 80's and 90's its hard for kids today to identify with it but if you can understand the show its great.

A whole episode will be based around if you get an erection from a male masseuse does that make you gay? Or what does it mean if a women touches your arm all the time.

The first episodes are extremely awkward, almost hard to watch.

Can I skip the first couple seasons or will that throw me off?

I don't think there'll be a problem with skipping off.
The show is praised for its continuity, but it mainly means they make a joke referencing a previous episode every now and then.
Each episode is pretty much self-contained, with a a very broad arc theme in the later seasons.
I recommend you to start at season 3.

If you go into it and maintain the idea that you're supposed to hate the main characters, your new favorite show.
