It's usually a way to diminish some player. There are system's that inflate stats or make mediocre players look really good. Happens in college all the time. The best NFL example I can think of is Mike Shanahan and is running system which could turn bums off the street into 1000 yard rushers with 4.5 ypc.

Nick has always been able to recruit. There are a LOT of good programs that get elite athletes and still don't win.
Nick wins because his teams consistently perform, have consequences for bad execution and you never see his teams acting like chimps. Same with New England.
