Graf Zeppelin was a German-built rigid airship named after the German pioneer of airships, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who was a count (Graf) in the German nobility.

At the behest of American newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, the Graf's "Round-the-World" (Weltrundfahrt 1929) flight in August 1929 officially began.

The Graf Zeppelin flew back across the Atlantic to Germany to refuel before continuing across Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, and the vastness of Siberia to Tokyo.

The Soviet government had formally requested the "Graf" for the airship to fly over its capital, Moscow, Dr. Eckener declined, a decision which resulted in considerable disappointment and annoyance on the part of the Soviets.

It was at the time the fastest circumnavigation of the globe.
