Who the fuck green-lit this? More importantly: Why?

Who the fuck green-lit this? More importantly: Why?
ffs how hard can it be to find a skinny, balding British actor?
There's no way having a different actor portray the character 40 years latre is less immersion-shattering than giving this uncanny valley abomination center stage in multiple scenes. I honestly couldn't stop thinking about it every time he was in screen.

And CGI Leia looked even worse.

I might be retarded, but when I first saw this movie, but I'm not a big Star Wars guy, and I hadn't seen the OT in a while, so when Tarkin showed up, I didn't notice he was CGI.
Then I saw it a second time, this time with the knowledge it was CGI, and THEN it looked CGI.

They recast Dodonna and Romodi because they're literal who background characters. Recast someone like Tarkin and you'll get a bunch of "hurr that looks nothing like Tarkin".

that actually looks pretty damn good

looks only like the difference in quality of a movie made in the 70's vs a movie made today

suck it you contrarian faggot

It looked great. Yes, if you stare at it looking for flaws like an autist you'll see some. If you suspend disbelief as these flicks require, it's great.

This particular pic is not the one you should have chosen for your dumbass argument.

If you are autistic and have face-blindness, I could see this passing for realistically human.
But not when you put him next to actual human actors.

this was objectively well done.

Someone who doesn't know star wars doesn't even notice he's CGI.

get your eyes checked reddit

People like you would have never made it in the time before cgi, when sfx were super apparent.

I think what gave spoiled the Tarkin CGI for me was the overacted headbobbing during some bits of dialogue

still felt completely natural when he was talking to krennic

I noticed pretty much instantly that there was something off about his face

wording this. I had no idea he was cgi on first viewing

That looks terrible. Straight out of that shitty animated star wars thing.

>ffs how hard can it be to find a skinny, balding British actor?
If they replaced him the next re-edition of TNH would have him instead of the original.

>Posts gif using shitty cam rip
>"Guys! Look how shitty this looks"
Why do you suck so bad OP?

I have facial blindness and I still noticed it. Mainly the fact that his skin was too transparent

>H-he's not real! I can tell!

Good job kid, they can't get one over on you!

Also, he didn't roll his "R's" as strongly as Cushing did. It made me aware that it wasn't Tarkin as much as the CGI.
I know Peter Cushing is dead, and they had to do something to replace him in Rogue One. Unless they were going to recast him, they'd have to CGI him. I looked at Tarkin and Leia the same way I look at CG Yoda or Jar Jar. They're not real, I know that. They're real in the scene, though, so that's good enough for me. And this was a DAMN good effort.

this

OP is one of the smartest guys i know, he even figured out that smaug in the hobbit wasn't a real dragon!

The issue is not whether or not he looks "pretty good."
The issue is that a neurotypical human mind can immediately spot how off it looks.
And seriously, for what? To test the tech? That's the only reason I can think of.

>Someone who doesn't know star wars doesn't even notice he's CGI.
Someone who doesn't know Star Wars doesn't give a shit if a different actor portrays the character, either.

Try again nigga The Thing is my favorite movie. This shit is distracting as fuck.

it looks like a video game cutscene

it is CGI? i watched it yesterday and i was like Is this real actor look like CGI vidya character

>this was a DAMN good effort.
no it wasn't, you just have no standards

it didn't look as unrealistic in the film as it does in stills or, shitty rips or gifs

this shouldn't need to be said but apparently you're all thick as fuck or just trolling . Wd

Yeah because higher video quality is gonna change the fundamental problems present in that gif.

That looks great. Yeah he looks a little otherworldly, but it only heightens his villainous mystique.

But yeah, congrats for realizing this man is deceased and this is but a digital copy.

I feel the exact opposite. It looks pretty damn good in the stills.
It's when the face is moving next to natural human faces that the illusion starts to really fall apart

le true patrician emerges, exquisite taste sir

Find better cgi then m80

It looked pathetic, if they had to have him in the movie at all it should have been just one or two scenes so they coulld put the budget in to making him look real

Totally distracting and unnecessary. Look at the stage of his neck on the left. Big rubber fold which looks ridiculous and they couldn't even get the stitching right on his collar. The patch of silver temple hair is another clear flaw. It's unnatural.

Why the fuck would you use CGI at all?
CGI """resurrection""" of dead actors for some reason eas the single biggest detriment to the film.

Just find a similar-looking actor Jesus Christ

>pathetic

Really, no hyperbole?

They should have just tried to get this guy.

This guy gets it, saw it with my family, who were big fans of the originals and they loved it and i had to explain to them how awful it actually looked and how retarded it was they didnt get just an actor do do it.

This was the thing everybody talked about right after seeing the movie dude wtf

Sup Forums your contrarian shit can be very retarded

It honestly looked way better on screen. I could only tell it was CGI because I was looking for it.

>goalpost.jpg

It was terrible it took you out of the film every time he was on screen, a vidya character right in the middle of all these people, completely immersion breaking

Wow, you sure showed them

pathetic in the sense that it was immediately noticeable, if this was in a game i'd say it looked fantastic but they failed at properly integrating him in to the scene

Would have been fine with this. Was fine with CGI Tarkin too though. People are being nitpicky babies about it.

The only way we'll get to photorealistic CG characters is if they keep pushing the tech forward, so I'm glad they're trying.

it's thanks to 90's born reddit queers like you that they're allowed to get away with this filth

Pretty high praise, I was wondering if there were people who didn't know the series and wouldn't notice. When you know he's dead you pay way more attention to the scenes.

Im not a die hard star wars fan and I only found out after finishing rogue one that this nigga be cgi youvirgins whine too much

Yea this, CGI was fine if this was a vidya cut scene or animated show, In the movie it was fucking terrible

Literally no-one is arguing that it's bad CGI.
The argument is that, despit being good CGI it fails to mask the fact that the character in question was obviously added to the scene in post and looks out of place to the point of distraction

OP literally asks why they did this instead of just getting an actor. The goalposts didn't move at all

When I first saw the movie I thought they found the guys long lost somehow much younger twin brother. Only after did I find out it was CGI.

>I'm glad their trying
Instead of just using ya know actors?

any scene where it doesn't stand out

>Years of masturbating to video games and SFM porn have actually diminished Sup Forums's ability to experience the Uncanny Valley

You need glasses user

I'm not the original user, I was going off what said
>DAMN good effort.
Assuming he meant damn good cgi. It's good cgi, just not good enough.

when you first saw this film your autism was undiagnosed, I think you can now safely assume you need mental assistance

It was obvious. Needed more rain and fog to obscure the cgi

Why don't you just watch the film. Every time the cartoon tarkin is on screen its glaringly obvious he's out of place

You can safely suck my cock ;)

...

Just use a fucking actor, problem solved

No it's not

My opinions > Your opinions

Check m8

Thanks but no, not a faggot

But my point is that's as good as 100% cgi characters get. It still looks weird, but every other instance of cgi characters either look worse or aren't entirely cgi.

Oh but you are, in the old Sup Forums sense anyways

Even if it didn't come out the best, I feel like I have to appreciate the effort. Guy Henry, the stand in actor (Cassius in Rome) had literally studied Cushing for one of his earliest roles, and they also used a facial cast of Cushing's from the 80s or so.

>check m8
Lol wat? Go back u cringyfaggot, and see an optometrist or maybe just stop playing so much vidya, your facial recognition is shot

he looked literally indistinguishable from his real self

k

You should just keep saying Reddit, it's a good look.

I saw ur mums face just fine last night when I nutted on her

As bad as Tarkin was, CGI Leia way worse

there was no need to have him there at all

autists will say its not a big deal when viewing pictures, and when you havent seen the movie and just screenshots with their two faces juxtaposed, it wont look too different, because he isnt moving. when he's moving, it looks like complete shit and unrealistic

They should have just put Henry in there.

Better yet, they should have written an original story.

Better yet, they should have stopped milking dead horses.

Good work user. People can't be blasé about this, the future impact is huge. Imagine a world where no new flick stars ever exist. That's where we're heading.

I hated every minute of the CGI stuff in R1, and that's a LOT of time too as I kept pausing and rewinding it to stare at all the edges/shadows to find faults.

Don't even get me started, i fucking left like a minute later

you should try not being so obvious then

user, you might want to read what you wrote and then maybe take some time to evaluate your life.

Not every instance, if you've got an alien a robot or something not meant to be human it can work, but the uncanny valley is a real thing, how they didn't understand before release how weird this would look is bizzare, you can't put a CGI person in the same scene as real ones it doesn't work, we don't have the technology

Are you ready for her to be entirely CGI in the next movie

>Fucking autists enjoying the movie while im sharting myself with anger over here! God damn autists!

why didnt they do just side shots or something, having them full cgi did not feel right, they are dead, let them stay that way.

Doubt it, that was prob a cartoon cutout, not like you'd be able to tell the difference

it will retard

She's gonna be CGI for 10 minutes until Kylo Ren kills her too.
And it's gonna look like shit and be the worst 10 minutes of the movie

...

>obvious he's out of place
Probably because you have it in your autisitic fucking mind that he's dead and the second he came on the screen you paused your autism video player to autistically LOOK for flaws which defeats the entire purpose of cgi. When you have it in your mind that this is cgi and activally look for flaws then you're obviously going to find flaws.

Rogue One takes place directly before Episode IV, so casting a different actor would be problematic.

Leia, they could have easily shown her from behind, as everyone would know it's her anyhow.

Noice

rogue one defenders are scum

boring shit movie with the worst kind of pandering

>More importantly: Why?
Because it was impressive.

I turned my head slightly as I saw the back of the head and thought something was off, then I snorted as I saw him turn.
I think it was pretty obvious, but I still think it was impressive.

Would be great for aliens in some sci fi, as eerily similar to us.

>with the worst kind of pandering

And what kind would that be? Take your time.

And you're gonna pay to see it anyways like the bitch you are

It was honestly the best star wars movie since the originals.

disney knows they can pump out garbage and the plebs are going to line up in droves regardless. it doesn't matter if it makes sense, it doesn't matter if it looks good. every time another one of theses comes out you'll all say it was better than the last one and fap over that until the next best one ever comes out. you disgust me.

They were finished shooting before she died.

>STOP ENJOYING THINGS I DON'T LIKE!!!!!! WAAAAAAAAH!!!!

Says the guy sitting in a Disney Presents: Star Wars: Rogue One thread for two hours.

Yea when he was first on screen I thought he might just be from the back stay in shadows, but no

They did it just to ruin it for you

no user. I decided never to pay for another star wars after tfa
