We had the same problem. We solved that by raising small sum of money from the entire class and buying him a nice brand name hygiene cosmetic set (deodorant, antiperspirant, shower gel etc). He was visibly frustrated when we gifted it to him in front of anyone but hey - it worked. He no longer smelled like unwashed gym locker.
