If you open up your borders to people from poor countries, they will come, regardless of whether they legitimately need refuge. All that matters is that Europe is a nicer place to live; this is the only incentive required.

If you want to talk about a first-world country that's far closer to the conflict, you could look at Israel. Even closer than any European country, and yet they don't exactly have an open door policy. Far from it. Because proximity is not the factor; recognition of national interest (or the lack of such recognition) is what matters.
