Hell yeah man, I picked it up as a hobby and quickly fell in love with it. Dropping my first album at the end of this year. I've been plucking for 4 years

You wanna jam with yourself? Learn the pentatonic scale and put on a backing track.

>thank me later

nothing beats fingering A minor

Simple plebian. I only jam in 13/16 whilst sweeping in locrian.

Go back under your rock Rusty Cooley

Chords and stuff are cool n all but it's only really the beginning. Need any pointers?

Yea cause that’s where you started.

I’m not trying to brag, I’m trying to introduce someone to the simplest way to start improvising and being able to pick up a guitar and play to anything.

>fuck off with your no creativity theory bullshit

sure that would be cool, i consider myself a beginner, found out about backing tracks 2 minutes ago

chad

Minor pentatonic scale. Just learn that, it’s seriously easy. Whatever key you’re playing in is where you start the scale to be in key.

>backing track in e minor
>start on the 12th fret

>backing track in A minor
>start on the 5th fret

There's a lot of things you can do to learn faster and more challenging music.

Download tux guitar for any tabs that you can't find on Songsterr as it can read guitar pro files. Also a useful writing tool. Don't get overwhelmed with theory as that comes in time. Focus on your playing mechanics and rhythm till your hands are thick as f. Try learning styles you wouldn't normally listen to.
Don't get obsessed with scales as theyre useless without context or understanding. Jam with other musicians (even if you're just using chord progs you already know). Develop your ear (try to find all the different ways you can tune your guitar on your own). Metronomes are boring, drum tracks are great. If you want to develop lead skills start with simple solos and work your way up; find Paul Gilberts lessons on YT. Most importantly though, keep it fun.

>fuck off with your no creativity theory bullshit
>probably plays in E standard tuning 4/4 Taylor Swift esque chords
I bet the ladies love you for your femine features.

The “12” is the 12th fret

The 1’s 3’s and 4’s are which fingers to use

You can start this scale any where it just changes what key it’s in

im trying to teach myself how to play because its very relaxing and i like it. im still a huge noob and im only getting used to switching between basic chords.

Pentatonics are really boring till you understand how to use vibrato and how to tease the chord shapes out of them. Good to learn with sure but it's easier to start off with basic solos so you can understand how to give context to what you're playing in the pent box

How long has everyone been playing?
>15 years too long

Oh ya. I've greatly enjoyed drunkenly serenading myself over the years. I find I go a little crazy if I go too long without picking up the guitar.

me too. keep at it and you will get better eventually

Theory is important but if that’s all you’re about, it takes all the fun out of playing.

>not insulted by a guy who can’t spell

Hair metal is gay like traps

Yea, I see what you’re saying. I had been playing for years before I actually learned and practiced scales and the pentatonic was so simple. I felt like I opened a door to a whole new world that I had been ignoring for so long.

i hope that you and i both do, user.

That's why you play in your basement for yourself. Because even preschoolers play the same shit over and over. There is a reason it's called "zombie chords". And I do not mean the Cranberries song.
Playing like this has nothing to do with creativity whatsoever.
It's like giving a monkey a guitar, he can do the same shit and even he doesn't give a fuck.

check out justinguitar.com if you haven't yet.

What's wrong with playing in the basement for yourself. Zombie chords are simple and easy to strum and sing. It's all about enjoying what you're doing. That's what hobbies are all about. Some of my favorite songs are very simple. Being a theory genius does not mean you will create interesting music that I would want to listen to.

>tldr

>What's wrong with playing in the basement for yourself.
Nothing.
I'm not sure if it was you but if it was, you greenposted about creativity.
And by the looks of it you wouldn't know creativity if it slaped your face.

>still can’t spell

I was the one that talking about creativity. Trying to get someone to learn the simplest scale isn’t me saying “this is how to be creative”

Don't forget to thank me later for this one user. You will not regret

What's it with newfags going after grammer.
I don't give two shits about your McDonalds language, you get the point and that's the important part isn't it?
Either get out next stop or head all the way to stupid town with this shit I don't care.
Those "simplest scales" have been done over and over you know. It's not creative.
I'm not attacking you for having fun. Have all the fun you want to have it doesn't affect me, does it?
To be creative means to create. Playing like this is reproduction.
It's not art, it's craft.
Creativity in the most subjective form possible.

So where would you suggest someone new should start?

by not listening to music

Picked up a B.C Rich Warlock and an amp like 3 weeks ago. I tried playing guitar when I was like 10 and bought the cheapest knock-off piece of shit guitar, didn't even have a proper amp. Was discouraged because it was hard and I could never get anything to sound good and the tutorials were weird. Sold it like half a year later.
First time touching the guitar again 3 weeks ago, I felt that same bit of fear that I'll get discouraged and end up selling it yet again when I plucked a couple strings on my own when the guitar came and it didn't sound like anything, but now that I'm back at it again I found some Andy Guitar guy on YouTube (probably toddler tier shit, I know), followed some 10 day tutorial plan to learn a couple chords, but now I sidetracked to learn some riffs (Smells Like Teen Spirit, Iron Man, Smoke on the water, Come as you are). Very fun so far but now I don't really know where to go from here as the rest of his 10 day program thing still seems a tad too simple.

By not asking questions that nobody can answer.
Question does not relate to you.
I don't know what you have and where you want to end up.
If you just want to play for fun you can do whatever you want, right?

But the very first thing I would learn the position of every note on the neck. Think for yourself why you use the tuning that you are using.
When you have established that, learn pentatonic scales, major scales, minor scales, triads, major chords, minor chords, ect, anything you can find on that. Find out what a diminished chord and what an augmented chord is.
In the age of internet it's not tough to find any of this.
Learn to play odd groupings with your scales.
All this just to cement in your mind just how a guitar works.
Otherwise you'll end up hitting a wall, becoming stuck playing the same 3 chords up and down.

You can't possibly become individual if you play zombie chords, everybody plays them, you'll sound like everybody else.

You’re a fuck lol

That gets you nowhere as far as learning guitar.

I can see the advantages of that if you already know what you’re doing

give me e pentatonic minor or give me death

>I can see the advantages of that if you already know what you’re doing

John Darnielle says he avoids listening to music he's likely to unintentionally rip off but there's endless supplies of other things to listen to.

tru man another v satisfying one is babe i gotta leave u by zeppelin

Been playing since I was 10 years old. 36 now. Mostly just pick up m acoustic and play a lot of fingerstyle stuff and folky chordy etc.

It is nice to plug in my electric and jam with somebody else on the very very rare occasion it happens these days.

Keep building your knowledge on chords and scales. Keep learning songs you know and like. I find it really fun when you know a song and you learn to play it. Eventually you cam just jam out songs or improvise and youll find yourself getting lost for hours just playing away.
