It's kinda insane. I went to Pompeii a few years back. The level of plumbing and hygiene in that ancient city was quite good. As a comparison my city in Norway still had quite a few outhouse toilets 30-40 years ago.

I went to India last year, it's a cesspool. Nothing but crowds of men, rubbish everywhere, cars honking and sewer stink. Foreigners are constantly hounded too.
