We had a pretty good cinema industry until all our major imports became American crap, same with countries like Italy, France, Germany,Spain, etc. They all used to make some of the best films around but everything they produce now is absolute dire.

Because there are no explosions, gun fights, CGI effects, or sex scenes.

Art reflects the society in which it was made. Britain has a shitty society at the moment, so the films it releases will in turn be shit.

They still have good television shows, mainly murder mysteries...although the novel has certainly receded since the Second World War -- that's a strange trade-off. I've heard that fewer film scripts can be produced each year in England for some reason.

Peter Greenaway is one of the last great directors. Even David Lean has become sort of forgotten now. Scorsese has repeatedly mentioned his connection to Powell and Pressburger, but I don't know how many people see that influence in his films. The British retain great craftsmen at Pinewood, although I don't know how much in-house tech they have.
