For the lore? Try reading pages on the Lexicanum first(it's a wiki). Start with the Emperor considering he embodies 30k/40k then start clicking on connecting articles until you can get a general picture of what the universe entails. Then start looking up the books linked on the pages that interest you and read them. It's what I did and it worked out for me. Let me know if you have further questions.

His body is going to be twelve foot tall and CGI, his voice is going to be dubbed over and made unnaturally booming by sound design, he's meant to be super enigmatic, so it's not like the actor has to be that good at facial acting.
What's more important is casting him right for those rare moments when he takes on a simpler, more jovial form to talk to a mortal in secret, like in the last church.
Last church actually gets funnier when you read it imagining the emporer as Rust Cole, exactly how he was dressed in True Detective.
