But then again I don't see any reason why a provider would suddenly shut down their service unexpectadly. Could it be fear? Ddos? Maybe it was just anonymous attacks? Or maybe not enough bandwith to support demand or simply didn't want to take the risk?

Even if the government had all the technology available to them. How could they find a service that's hidden behind multiple relays? They can't attack a target they can't find.
