Hes mostly a meme. That's not to say you couldn't argue he was a good president, but hes glorified beyond belief. His policies are frequently blamed as the source of a variety of issues we have now. Especially concerning the growing deficit and debt as the trend started during Reagan's administration. His foreign policy during the cold war is obviously extremely controversial. Republicans like to worship him like he was some sort of god, but in my opinion hes pretty much just the last non-shitty republican president and not worth the praise he gets. On the other hand there are some stupid Clinton-level conspiracies the left frequently accuses him of.

The economy was prosperous under Reagan and wages were high, but apparently, he did increment the deficit and give amnesty to 3 million illegals.

I am not old enough to remember president Reagan's administration so don't take my word for it.

People vastly overstate how much Asia affected the American manufacturing industry. The increase of per worker productivity in the US due to the advancement of automation technology has probably had 10 times the influence on manufacturing than competition from any Asian country.

As someone who actually lived through the 80's, here's my take on it.

The lat 70's were fucking shit. Very similar to today, except people were worse off.

Things looked bleak, we had a weak as fuck pussy president who meant well but couldn't inspire or lead for shit, very similar to today.

Then reagan won, and it was a breath of fresh air. He stood up to our enemies, projected strength, and made people proud to be American again. Yes, he had his problems and controversies, but they were nothing compared to the bullshit of today. Oh no, we sold arms to iran to get hostages released and fund the contras in spicaragua? How does that fucking remotely compare to basically giving arms to al-qaeda in syria and basically sponsoring the rise of ISIS, among dozens of other huge fuckups of the current administration?

Anyway, if you take a look at the state of the country when reagan got in vs the state of it when he left, you have to come to the conclusion that his presidency was massively successful.

All he did was lower taxes, and made it easier for Companies to start up. In the end that makes your country better. He really didn't do much desu, he just let economy go nutts.

Definitely an exceptional leader, but not necessarily an exceptional president.
