Looks like Erdogan is arresting and killing the last vestiges of secular opposition among the government/judicial system/educated masses. I am not saying he staged the coup, that's a bin tinfoil, but he uses its aftermath indiscriminately.

If the US believed they couldn't control Erdogan, then it might be a possibility. Erdogan has expressed willingness to work with the Russians recently. There might be other unknown reasons like Erdogan planning to throw the US military out of Turkey that we don't know about. Regardless, it would have to be some kind of major shift in policy and a sudden burst of weakening US influence in Turkey and the region as a whole for the US to support a coup at this point and time.
