I will never understand this call

Even if they didn't have confidence in Lynch's ability to run it in, they don't think he could do it with 3 tries?

It was a fixed game lad. Like all sports. Expect similar for a pats win tonight.

Devils advocate - Lynch sucks in the redzone, and that pass was a gimme if 21 hadn't read it so well.

pete carroll is a bad coach

as soon as the DC was hired away the team went downhill

>20% in the red zone
>have 4 attempts
>90% chance of winning superbowl

What would have happened if the guy who caught the ball had fallen in the end zone instead of in the green zone?

>Devils advocate

>beaners in charge of math

>doubles advocate

Touchback, the pats would have gotten it at the 20 yard line

Patriots get the ball at the 20 yard line. It would have been more favorable had Butler not ran out of the end zone.

Was it just adrenaline that made him run into the green zone or something?

part of the playcall was they only had one timeout left. So they couldn't run it all 3 times or the clock would run out / some hurried play would occur

Does it really matter where you kneel to end the game?

Nice math.

Lowest risk play in the whole NFL besides kneeling with the ball. One total interception all year in that situation, far more fumbles occur at the 1.

Unless the refs decided he took it into the end zone deliberately after making the interception - Pats still win on a safety and the Seahawks probably can't get in field goal range, but if he wasn't sure I think it's the right move

he completes 1 in every 5 (20%)
he has 4 chances

the odds of not getting a touchdown are 0.8^4 which is 0.104

He wasn't sure if it was a safety or not so he didn't take the risk, smart play.

It was worth it just to see all the LIFELONG Seahawks fans in their brand new Russel Wilson jerseys crying about "Why didn't they run it???" like the 6 YouTube videos they watched in the day before the game made them an expert.

The clock ran down to 25 seconds before they got set up for the next play, and they only had 1 timeout left. They couldn't run it 3 times, they had to try one pass.
If they run it here on second down, they HAVE to call a timeout and they HAVE to pass on 3rd. Pete knew that Bill knew that. He didn't want to be predictable on 3rd down. I'm not saying it was the right decision, but it wasn't as terrible as it's made out to be.

>It was worth it just to see all the LIFELONG Seahawks fans in their brand new Russel Wilson jerseys
>WE ARE 12
Literally.

He made the right call. If the refs decided that he had gained possession of the ball in the green and then gone back into the blue, going down in the blue means it's a safety, not a touchback, which would be very bad.

Get ball in blue, fall in blue = touchback, best
Get ball in blue, fall in green = get ball at 2 yardline, still 99% chance to win game but tiny amount of risk of missed snap or something
get ball in green, fall in green = same as above
get ball in green, fall in blue = safety, seahawks get a tiny chance to come back

>lining up kearse on browner (a former seahawk)
knew it would be a bad call from the get go. such an embarrassing 4th quarter by both defense and offense

Would you guys support a rule that you can't get a safety on a turnover? Seems like bullshit that you can get a fumble recovery or interception at the goalline and get punished for it.

If he made the catch, instead of trying to let it hit his chest, it would've been 3rd & Goal at the 1 at least. The call was fine. Execution was trash.

Running the ball was plan b in case an of incomplete pass would stop the clock. Either way Pete Carroll's first choice to throw the ball over the middle was in poor judgement of the Patriots D

If momentum takes em into the end zone, it's not a safety.

>(2) If a defensive player, in the field of play, intercepts a pass or catches or recovers a fumble, backward pass, scrimmage kick, free kick, or fair catch kick, and his original momentum carries him into his end zone where the ball is declared dead in his team’s possession.

Butler would not have been called for a safety if he just downs himself unless AFTER going forward like he does in the gif, he for some reason runs back into the endzone and got downed

Here you go.

Can someone shop a picture of Malcolm Butler in a tux handing Brady the Lombardi on a silver platter, and Tom saying "Thanks butler"

take a good hard look at this picture and tell me why you're wrong

It was a good call but a terrible pass

considering that it was blatant pass interference it's the most overblown outrage ever

>considering that it was blatant pass interference

...

I dont know much about American football, but watching that made me respect the sport even more.

They talk about this all the time, but taking into account regular season also, the % of pass plays like that making it in were better than the % of run plays like that making it in.

So going solely off the numbers, the pass was the better option. However, this neglects the fact Lynch was the best back in the game and was fantastic all game long.

With three tries you can do

RRR
RRP
RPR
RPP
PRR
PPR
PRP
PPP

With RRR and RRP, you only have one TO, so one of those plays has to take place in a no huddle situation, which isn't ideal. That means if you run it on 2nd and don't score, you're probably going to have to pass it on 3rd. If you pass it on 2nd, the defense is in a situation where they have to respect both the run and the pass equally on all three downs and it's just a matter of who plays better.
