God is important for our survival and sanity. In a place where there is no hope and death can become any second (for example in a war), there is no atheists.
But, it is important to understand that it is not real, it is made by your own brain to keep you sane.
That correlates perfectly with developed western countries. There were less and less people believing god after 1990 all the way to 2009. But, as soon as the wealth was not distributed evenly and life started to suck again, more and more believers arrived, and even presidents started to call for a god. This has repeated countless of times in history.
Back in the early 00's, there were television programs that were extremely popular and they were about sceptics, science and atheists. Now, you can't find them anywhere. Now television is filled with UFO-believers, psychics, witches and all kinds of religious bullshit and all of them are trying to tell you how to find the truth about you and how to live a good life, but at the same time telling how the other psychics, wizards and priests are not telling the truth.

But taking any religious text which was meant as symbolism, literally... well we know that's kind of stupid and that's why there's so many people who mock the monotheistic religions. They are fucked up people, violent and willfully ignorant to insist on believing those texts in a literal sense. Islam and Christians particularly.
