Isn't this like the equivalent of being 8 feet tall in India?

How do you keep getting banned? Are you the BLACKED poster?

I'm a complete novice working on my first screenplay. So far I'm really paranoid about including unnecessary details so my first draft is a skeletal outline. But when I look at Tarantino scripts, he has a popping sense of humor that you can tell when you're reading. I'm not quite sure if I should even include POV or camera panning directions. I'm sure no one will take me seriously until I've submitted my fifth draft to an editor.
Hey, I liked the BLACKED thread.

the first time I was banned for making a thread asking about Ariel Winter.
second time I think it was because I posted a picture of Ashley Graham, but I'm not sure.
>Are you the BLACKED poster?
No.

I meant to respond to this earlier, but I don't even know what to say to you. Good luck.

Do you guys come up with a story based off themes? Or come up with a story and decipher the themes after?

well this thread was a failure

are there seriously no screenwriters on Sup Forums?
what we made a story about l'ambassadeur

>what we made a story about l'ambassadeur
that was a meme
Sup Forums isn't serious about film
And I probably made this thread too late

can somebody help me out with different styles and types of film grain and definition? Like, examples of some of the basics and what they look like? especially older styles from the early 2000s, there were lots of tv shows filmed in..something. I cant describe it other then comfy. it just looks peaceful and comfy compared to today
you know what I mean?

another example is this movie. its shot on 16mm I believe and it just makes it so unique. Not warm and comfy like the others I said but more of a subtle dark, cooler vibe

im just starting to get into film making and again, any examples on different film grains would be appreciated. Im really in the dark with this sutff

can't help but I wish you luck

it's pretty well known, but Pi (1998) was shot on high contrast 16mm film

I dont know the actual name, but I do know what it is your talking about. Part of the reason why I love watching shows like gilmore girls or buffy is the warm definition it was shot in. they really dont film like that anymore

>What are y'all working on?
dozens of rehashed ideas that are basically just fanfiction with some character self insertion that im too scared to actually get critic on
same as always

I don't know if anyone read the script I keep posting but never actually work on finishing here but I'll post it again.

drive.google.com/open?id=0B6uwaxNQt5HRSDJBMXB4clloSHM

I'm gonna do a little more on it tonight.

>mfw shooting a short series just for fun turned into me making the entire series a pilot for a couple of producers

The anxiety and excitement is killing me. I want to take my time with it but shit's going so fast.

>dozens of rehashed ideas that are basically just fanfiction with some character self insertion that im too scared to actually get critic on
AYYYYYYYYY! Me too, bud. I'd offer help, but you're afraid of critique.
I was scared too, I think, actually I couldn't get anyone to critique me.
Everyone I tell my ideas to are completely plebs with almost no critical thinking skills, it's terrible.

sorry for blogpost

>What are y'all working on?
8-episode series of short episodes. The idea is we're dropped in the middle of an already established friendship amongst four stoners, and we're seeing what's nothing more than just a weird week for them. During the writing process it went from Mallrats meets Atlanta to Community meets That 70s Show

I still wanna reshoot the first episode as a Mallrats meets Atlanta-type short film, separate from the series

>Kira
dropped

>stoners
dropped, you wheed whackers are so annoying.

Yeah I was on a real bad Jojo's Pt. 4 kick when I started writing it.

I know, I know. Back to the T70S comparison, I wanted it to be more subtle than your average Seth Rogen flick. And it's actually a driving plot point throughout the series as opposed to just a shoutout to people who toke.

eh, not so bad, I was thinking of Death Note.
I'll check out your script meaning I'll read a page of it.

basically yeah, I am a 5'8" pajeet and my friends call me a lanklet.

Yeah. I've been watching Death Note though, been putting it off for years. It's neat but since I started getting into anime fairly recently with One Punch Man, Jojo's, Gurrenn Lagann, etc. it's kind of a shock to see an anime that's really more about a cat-and-mouse game than the usual colorful exaggerated emotions I'm accustomed to.

I'm not too far in though. I hear it gets crazier.

not working on a film but I am working a graphic novel instead(2poor4films), its a cyberpunk retelling of Le samourai.I havent planned how the whole story will work out but I have planned a prologue which will help me lay the dots.

what does (O.S.) mean?
>electronic cigarette
>Using "fucking" instead of an adjective to describe Johnathon's apartment

Maybe it's because I'm an aspiring director, not screenwriter, but you not giving physical descriptions of your characters annoys me.
This dialogue seems pretty generic. I like when Johnathon says "I dunno man, it ain't looked like nothing I ever saw. Sure as shit didn't act like it.", it makes him sound uneducated, and that's kind of interesting.

Are these names permanent? I've never heard of an Asian Sam, and you shouldn't keep both Kira and Johnathon.

>what does (O.S.) mean
Off Screen

>Maybe it's because I'm an aspiring director, not screenwriter, but you not giving physical descriptions of your characters annoys me.
I was always taught not to describe your characters in too much detail, more their personality traits than anything. I recognize that I'm lacking in that department as well.

>I like when Johnathon says "I dunno man, it ain't looked like nothing I ever saw. Sure as shit didn't act like it.", it makes him sound uneducated, and that's kind of interesting.

I've considered toying with that idea, a bit of this I want to be Jonathan's character progression as well as Kira's.

>Are these names permanent?
Probably not. If I ever get around to actually refining this thing I'm probably gonna switch the names around.

One more thing I forgot to put in my post, it's completely an opinion, but it'd be cool if you described character actions and shit during dialogue.
That could be my director senses peeking out again though.

>it'd be cool if you described character actions and shit during dialogue.
How do you mean?

Thanks for the input btw, I post this on both here and /r9k/ in their occasional cyberpunk threads and I'm lucky if I get even one person saying anything about it.

I've written 82 page script
It's set in 80's Japan and has two ninjas
Its like Bad Taste + Karate Kid with vaporwave feels
Im fucked am i?

>It's set in 80's Japan and has two ninjas
I mean I'm riding off this weird 80's nostalgia wave as well

You should be fine so long as you try and put your own spin on it, make it interesting.

So, I'm trying something for a story. The antagonist has something on him that lets him go back a short distance in time (only has a few charges). He's trying to locate another character's secret base.

The other character has a collection of magical things. So, the idea is that the collector has something he sends out to kill the antagonist after he gets pissed off enough. Like a creature of some sort. A creature who has perfect tracking, and goes in a straight line...

Is it a neat idea to have the antagonist find the base by recording measurements on the creature, going back in time once or twice, changing spots, recording more measurements, and triangulating the location of the secret base?

Which is more difficult to write: a proper film or a proper miniseries?
What do you writers have planned once you've finished a script? Sell it, or shoot it yourself? If you're going to sell it, how do you plan to go about it?

I'm almost finished piecing together my story and writing the first draft. A movie recently came out that shares about .05% of the plot and setting of my story, and although that number is so low I worry that fools might think it inspired me.

>was super into film making for a month but i just don't feel like doing anything with the vast amount of knowledge i acquired by lurking threads

WHATS WRONG WITH ME

Like when Johnathon calls Kira on the phone, I don't know if we're actually seeing Johnny in that scene but I mean something like this:

JOHNATHON
(speaking fast, in desperate relief) Good! good. Could you come over to my place?
I got something going on here I really don't know how to take care of, and you always--

But again I'm not a screenwriter or want to be.

try to avoid camera panning and pov shit, that's for the director to work out. only include it if it's 100% necessary to the story, like an important transition, or a pan that later reveals something. QT gets away with that because he's the director and he has a very solid vision in his head as he writes. I mean, if you're going to direct it then go ahead, but avoid camera direction if you're aiming to sell it.

how do you guys feel about people who don't watch the stuff they are in/do?

also what's the fucking point of directing if you do not also edit?

>What do you writers have planned once you've finished a script? Sell it,
how the fuck do you sell a script?
I'd imagine a film is more difficult to write because of pacing. Or does pacing more have to do with directing/editing?
>A movie recently came out that shares about .05% of the plot and setting of my story
What movie?

maybe filmmaking isn't your passion asshole

but i like to watch a movie every now and then

that's like telling me i shouldn't program a video game just because i like them

> what's the point of directing if your not editing

Editing is a job, they make it how the director wants it. They can try out different ways of editing it, but the final desiscion isn't up to them.

It's like acting, it's your portrayal of the character but you still gotta follow instructions.

check the special features on the Traffic Criterion Collection. They have a segment about getting the proper look for their film. They go over filters, lenses, etc. Pretty educational. listening to the director commentary on films that interest you might give you greater insight, also. google around for film and lens breakdowns and info.

Ah I getcha. I figured that was something I wasn't supposed to do, like I always heard the rule was sorta to just show the bare minimum and leave the rest up to director interpretation.

Kinda hard to do as such when I also want to be a director and I desperately want to do stylish as fuck visuals and shit. Screenwriting reigns me in a little.

just because you enjoy doing something doesn't mean you're actually interested in it as a career, dumbass.
Enjoying sex doesn't mean you want to be a pornstar.

it's a neat idea, but you need to flesh out the rest of the story. that idea should be only one element of the entire picture. it's a solid place to start though.

I'm currently making a short animated experimental film.

Basically it's handrawn stop motion animaton (1000s of peices of paper) but instead of actual drawings it's mathetmatical formula's that if graphed make a picture. It's going to be utterly indecipherable to anyone unless they freeze-frame and pull out a graphics calculator. Which is kind of the point, I want to make something so pretentious it borders on parody.

There are no rules, only suggestions.
If you want to be a director write in your directions.
Screenwriters can be auteurs too.

I guess I didn't explain it properly. It is a part of a whole story. I just wanted to make sure that the antagonist's plan makes sense.

>Which is kind of the point, I want to make something so pretentious it borders on parody.
why waste your time on that?

Anyone else here /writetomusic/? I basically wrote the entirety of while listening to Vaporwave and it got me into a really interesting groove (especially since I hadn't planned a damn thing beforehand)

From what I've gathered you register your script with the WGA, submit it to a few different firms that act like a library for scripts but they have people sifting through submissions for anything of interest, and you get an agent to help you have even the remotest chance of getting the attention of a production company if you're some nameless fuck.

And the film is Passengers. That shitty space romance flick with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. My story involves a colonization attempt and suspended animation, but that's the only thing the two have in common. The rest is about as different as it can possibly be. I only ever heard of the Passengers title, but I never looked into the story since I'm not interested in anything those two actors are starring in. Then I saw something somewhere, heard the plot, and I felt my heart drop. But it might be a good thing. With space movies being more common, I think partially due to the fame and success of Star Wars, it might allow for my story to be picked up.

but to me it does

Always. Instrumental tracks of various genres to get my mind in the mood without the distraction that vocals can sometimes create.

okay kid

finished doing this couple days ago
tried to do my first short doc
youtube.com/watch?v=_ZaUTm33TpU

i would have cut out the performances that had fuzzy music

yeah you're probably good bro
Passengers fucking tanked and it was a shitty rom com in space with rape undertones

how do i make my movie scary?

i plan on doing horror stuff

not because im a weird guy like jay from rlm who likes that stuff

but im kind of screamish and cheesey shit from x files spooked me

couldn't even finish videodrome so scary ;_;

I read a person's idea that Passengers should have began with JLaw waking up and the story is seen through her eyes, and Chris Prat slowly becomes more suspicious. A mystery/thriller instead of a fuckin romance flick.

I've got a huge idea that I keep working on from time to time, when I'm not working on this current project. It's the combination of 3-4 ideas that I had for other movies, but they were all loosely and not so loosely connected so combining them made sense. I think a miniseries might be the best format - the world that I'm building has so much potential that it would be a shame to not fully explore it. If I could get established as a writer so I was in a position to pitch ideas then this would be the first idea I'd pitch. I would want to work with some other writers to bounce my ideas off of them and help me refine them. Hopefully that's a future I'll get to experience.

well good for you man all my ideas are shit

understand why that stuff scares you. you could get into psychology. Carl Jung discussed archetypes, and the collective unconscious - something that we all share deep within our psyche. Some fears are so ingrained in our mind that it's literally in our DNA. Once you learn what those fears are you can decide how to best represent them in your movies.

Finish Videodrome.

Read my SCRIPT and SHIT ON IT.
drive.google.com/open?id=0Bz7WR19NhKXqaC1uLXp5VmRCUDg
Its combination of Bad Taste + Karate Kid + vaporwave i guess. Fucking 80's action movie cheese fest.

make sure that you're not being a perfectionist or simply hating your own ideas for no reason. Ideas are rarely birthed being perfect. People need to refine them constantly, and sometimes the end result will be very different from what you've started with. If you know a person who's also creative you could see if they would be willing to collaborate, or at least hear your ideas and give you input. Make sure to tell them to be brutally honest though. I had an interest in writing 14+ years ago, and I was writing down premises for stories. Not long after that I looked back at those ideas and realized they were all dogshit. Embarrassingly dogshit. Then I had an idea that wasn't as bad, and I worked with that for a while. As this was going on I would have the occasional idea for something new. Now I've got 8+ solid ideas that I'm excited about, and I've had those ideas for a few years so they pass the "wait 2 years and see if it's shit" test.

Just keep refining your ideas and the refining process itself, and the good ideas will eventually come to you more frequently and with greater ease. Don't give up. If you need more encouragement then look at the movies playing at your local theater and realize how shitty they are. You can do better than that.

I'm enjoying what I'm reading thus far, it's cheesy as all hell but kinda charming in that aspect.

Listening to Kavinsky while I read helps too, though for some reason I keep getting flashbacks to the 90's Power Rangers movie.

you got any articles on that shit?
>Finish Videodrome.
Not even the user you replied to, but fuck that movie, I'm not even gonna start it.
I shouldn't have even downloaded it.

I'm a few pages in and I like it. You gave the disclaimer that it's a cheesefest, and it is, and I like that. I'll keep reading this.

If you're going for cheese you could easily make this movie yourself. Start drawing storyboards dude. If you got together with some friends, rehearsed lines, scouted for locations, built props and sets, assigned roles and positions, and set some sort of shooting schedule then you could make this in your spare time. And you would have a few hundred vaporwave artists begging to have you feature them in your film so they can get some exposure.

I get like 90% of my inspiration for visuals through music, and it kinda sucks because I know I'm not talented enough/don't have enough resources to pull off what I really want to shoot. All I can do is write, and even then only when I get in the mood of it. It's difficult to portray the kind of mood I want through jut writing, especially when I know exactly how I want it to look but I can't put it into words.

youtube.com/watch?v=j0KzUS0b_uc

Psychology and Carl Jung is a deep rabbit hole to go down, but if you want to write more believable characters with motivations and story arcs then it's worth the time spent.

its because it was actual film and not digital trash that gets overdone in post because any monkey can play with the color temperature at will

it sounds like you should paint or draw your visuals. you don't need to be a Picasso or Michelangelo, all you need to do is convey the mood and visuals that you want to write about. Once you have the visuals you can examine them and then let the descriptions and words come to you at their leisure. Guillermo del Toro is a visual screenwriter. He carries a few notebooks with him at all times and they're filled with ideas and sketches. It sounds like you're a similar writer.

I heard it expressed best as "The brain is for creating ideas, not storing them". find a visual medium that allows you to create scenes as fast as you can imagine them, and then you can save them for later to draw inspiration from them.

I am a perfectionist, that's a fact, always have been always will be.
>simply hating your own ideas for no reason
Clinical depression is supposed to make me hate everything I do or something, but I'm sure all my ideas are dogshit.
I don't know any creative people which is why I make these threads on here (Reddit is complete shit, worse than I expected).
But people either don't respond to my posts or I'm too scared to post my ideas, which are as follows cause fuck it:

1. An animated adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, where The Wicked Witch is secretly the princess and The Wizard is a Stalin/Rasputin expy. This is my most personal work, but I feel it's too similar to Wreck-It Ralph and Wicked.

2. A black guy pulls Exaclibur out of the stone before Arthur. It's just Blazing Saddles in Medieval England, it's shit.

3. An eccentric billionaire (Jeff Goldblum) takes in a family during a really bad snow storm. He seems nice and really charismatic at first, but overtime his malicious intent is revealed. It's like Rocky Horror meets Willy Wonka and really is just an excuse to do weird alternate reality fetish shit including incest.

5. Our system of law enforcement gets replaced by people who kill instead of imprisoning criminals. Young black girl in a gang gets kidnapped or whatever by the government, experimented on to create a human weapon, but breaks free and is psychic and shit. Japanese guy is part of the new system of law enforcement, but also a former gang member like the girl, and is tasked with killing her but he doesn't (for some reason). There's a lot of racist people in the new system of law enforcement too, it's the perfect excuse to kill a bunch of black and brown people. Too similar to Legion, Logan, and it's basically a rip off of Akira but with racism.

(cont)

thanks pal

I hadn't thought about it like that but maybe you're right.

I'm a pretty shit artist but I can probably learn. Thanks bud

can someone help me get good at lighting and photography? i'm autistic and about cinematography and want to make GOAT looking kino.

any recommendations for shit to read or watch about lighting and photography would be great.

(cont)

4. A depressed anthro tiger gets kicked out of the the jungles of New Orleans for not being scary enough becomes friends with a human child that helps builds his confidence. He wants to be a jazz singer and ends up falling in love with the kid's mom, an Afro-Latina voiced by Dascha Polanco or Rosario Dawosn.

6. My only good idea. A musical about a zombie trying to win over the boy she had a crush on in high school, who was also her best friend, and is also married now or getting married. I can't compose music so I haven't really worked on it.

My other two ideas aren't really ideas, like, there's no story, but

I want to do a horror film where the main girl is dumb, kind of bimbo-ish. I started watching Buffy (the movie) and really liked that idea of a dumb blonde being a savior and needing to fight the supernatural. I wish I could ripoff It Follows and set in a big city, but It Follows was very popular.

And I want to do a romcom exploring the nature of love. Does "true" love exist, or do you just learn to love (tolerate) someone overtime? How romanticism ruins romance, and how people place platonic love over romantic love. But I can't think of a story for those themes that aren't generic shit.

don't worry about being shit. you're not creating this stuff to hang it in a museum somewhere. as long as you encapsulate the mood.

go to /p/ bro

Pick up an old Canon AE-1 or something and learn the ropes, assuming you want to shoot on film.

I started as a photographer and now do videography work and get paid

Thnks, hope you enjoy it to end.
And please give feedback.

>posts all my ideas

wow man

it's just great to see someone know him outside India

Clinical depression can be a good thing for an artist or writer. It gives you something to draw ideas from.

1.) I like it
2.) I really like it
3.) Has potential
5.) this goes for 1 also: it's almost impossible to have a truly unique idea. that doesn't mean your creative process should be "it's like (movie) but (tiny difference)", but it does mean that it's ok if your movie shares elements from various movies. We all get our inspiration from somewhere, and it's more than acceptable to be inspired from a movie that you enjoy. If writers kept crumpling up paper every time they noticed that it was vaguely similar to some movie then no movies would ever be made. If you have an idea but then you realize it's exactly like another movie then try to rework the idea in a way that makes it different. I talked about Carl Jung and the archetypes earlier - almost every character in very story fits one or more of these iconic and intrinsic archetypes, but it's the details that separates them from one another. When you get into movie theory and deconstructing films into their most basic elements then you realize how similar all movies are. Your writing can share a similar premise to other movies, but work on making the story unique and you should end up with something that you'll be content with. This one has potential, but almost too much potential. There are so many ways you could go with this. Of all the ideas so far this is the one that you should spend the most time with. I don't mean that like it's shit and you need to fix it, but it's got a lot of potential and you need to figure out how to build the world, determine the laws of the universe with regards to the psychic powers and the supernatural, and which direction to go with the story.

4.) If you wrote some lyrics and used them to express your depression then this could be great. Jazz doesn't even have to fuckin rhyme, so the lyric writing becomes even easier. It's an interesting premise, and the depression angle could almost guarantee that this gets made. Animated/partially animated films are really getting into the feelings aspect of humanity, so tackling a topic like depression would be a great approach.
6.) seriously great idea

verdict: you've got a lot of ideas to work with and they all show promise. as far as your other ideas go, those are good beginnings. A lot of my ideas began with only a premise, and the story came later. Work on those as the ideas come to you. You have so many ideas that it's fine if a few of them sit on the backburner and you only bust them out every so often to write a line or two to flesh out the idea.

I dunno if you'd want to leave those posts up. Some scoundrels with their foot already in the door will regularly trawl the internet looking for free ideas so that they can crank out a script overnight.

I'm glad that makes you happy, man, but I think most people seriously into film know of him, the Apu Trilogy is in the Criterion Collection.
And I'm pretty sure he influenced Wes Anderson for Moonrise Kingdom.

Charulata, The Big City, and Nayak are all on my watchlist but seem hard to find.

I liked the zombie musical idea, it would be some comedy/romance

Same here, i am 6'1" tho and i have no friends.
Only my mom calls me a lanklet when she phones me every night after dinner to make me feel less lonely. Fuck Bombay it's a lonely place.

>It gives you something to draw ideas from.
I don't think so, but it is kind of the basis of my Wizard of Oz adaptation.
>I really like it
really? I don't know how I'd go about it, I haven't considered it at all because ripping off Blazing Saddles seems cheap.
>This one has potential, but almost too much potential. There are so many ways you could go with this.
Maybe that's my problem, because I can't think of what direction to go with in terms of story.
An early idea was that the psychic girl and law enforcer would be trying to expose a presidential nominee that had ties to white surpremacist groups, but it's too close to Trump shit, although this was going to be a white woman. Can't really go with the expose "white supremacy" plot because white supremacy has been exposed multiple times with little change. Another idea had the girl go off the rails and become an almost unstoppable Christ-like figure and symbol for black resistance, and he has to stop her, but I don't want to make her out to be a bad guy. My biggest problem with this idea is that I can't get a handle on the characters, I don't know any gang members or what being in a gang would feel like.
I can't think of an actual reason for him to want to help her, "she's a little girl" doesn't seem good/selfish enough. No matter what backstories/traits I give them they're flat and uninteresting.
I've actually been working on this one the most but have still gotten nowhere.

>I dunno if you'd want to leave those posts up.
already deleted my man

Thanks, it's the only idea I really believe in, I debated even posting it.
It's just too bad I don't know how to compose anymore.

I always think Nayak was highly influenced by 8½, still great imo

I fucking love the ending of The Big City, the ending is so subtly romantic

can't find Charulata link though, sorry, it's great too, not original screenplay but still a masterpiece imo

For the psychic story, compile a list of films which are similar to it in some shape or form, then watch and study them. Watch some gang films. a part of writing is studying the topics that you write about. it helps you write convincing characters and scenarios. and fleshing out characters doesn't have to reach Kubrick-tier. Some characters are best left mysterious. Storytelling is deciding what to tell the listeners/viewers/readers and what not to tell them. I keep recommending this, but you should get into psychology and Carl Jung. It will help you tremendously when it comes to character development. and if you have well developed characters then the dialogue practically writes itself.

don't worry too much about composing, unless you want to get back into it. just write lyrics, describe the tempo and arrangement, and you'll be set. writing the story, lyrics, AND composing the music is probably too much, unless you're John Carpenter

I've been trying to get this screenplay going; but I can't figure out semicolons.

oh shit!!! thank you, user. you're the GOAT.

I've watched The Fury, Carrie, Logan, Akira, Legion, Leon: The Professional, Menace II Society, A Clockwork Orange, Strange Days.
I have others gang movies I downloaded or in my Netflix list but I haven't got to them because of how disillusioned I am with the whole thing.
I'mma watch that Jung video linked earlier when I wake up in the afternoon, but even with characters I have no story, maybe setting up the world more will help so I need to learn how to do that.

I kinda do actually. I love musicals and it'd be great if I could do a bunch of them.

popping out for the night. I'll finish reading Neon Blades in the morning, and I'll write a response to it when I'm done, whether it's in this thread or the next screenwriting general. You niggas keep helping each other out and giving each other input.
