So. I'm trying to find a small, discreet microphone that fits into a hole slightly bigger than a sharpie meant for cable management that can capture a room's worth of sound, mostly close but otherwise as much coverage as possible, without a bunch of background hissing and easily getting drowned out by other sounds. Anything that can plug into a laptop will do, but if there was some sort of standalone option that could send over the network that'd be even better. (I've looked for something like that and found nothing)
For example, the one I'm using now is an ancient $10 desktop microphone that I bought years and years ago that I took the base off of so it would be discreet, leaving only a cable outside of the hole. But, as it's old, the quality of the sound it picks up is mediocre at best, and a fan being turned on in the room on the other side leaves any sound I would want to hear almost impossible to discern.
Guaranteed win if this can be figured out, if I can find a good solution in this thread I'll post some other OC I've gotten over the years.

Can you solder? Electret mic capsules are dirt cheap and any voice recorder or laptop can use them as an input. That's likely what your old desktop mic is, just with a fancy neck and cord attached.
Hell cheap lapel/lav mic might work too if you get it with TRS jack

The cheap capsules now are about the same as the midrange ones from 10 years ago, you might even be able to buy a mic on a cord off Amazon or ebay for less than mic + cord + solder + iron would cost you.
Cold solder joints still conduct electricity, if it smells like chicken you're holding the iron wrong.
