When I was in elementary school back in the late 90s, we were shown a film, on VHS, about a boy that travels across the world and is chased by a shapeshifting witch. She becomes a mermaid at some point. It was made using large marionettes/puppets. Shit scared the fuck out of me as a kid, and I want to see if anyone can help at least find a title for me.

Yes and no. There is nothing inherently wrong about it. I was born in '77. I grew up watching this type of stuff. When I was a kid, the cool kids watched Star Wars and Krull and that type of movie. I love stop-motion and puppetry, but one of my favorite styles are this Taiwanese hand-puppet style.
I wish we had a show or movie made in a similar looking style but with life-sized, mannequin-like androids.
