Exactly my feeling. Whenever fellow 老外 complain about 汉字, or even gaijin who study Japanese and want Japan to get rid of Kanji, I always think back to pictures like that. Han characters just have an inherent beauty to them that just richly symbolizes the East. Just because ABC's might be "easier" for foreigners to study, doesn't mean Asians should betray their roots.
Are you in Hangzhou or something? I guess your pronunciation of Chinese is good enough. You don't have to be pure Beijing to be understood. Just listen to 邓小平 Deng XIaoping's accent, thick as fuck Sichuan accent, and he was THE leader of China for 20 years. Not only is his pronunciation weird, but his tones were often very weird. Especially in the South, being standard isn't necessary.

You don't ignore grammar and everything else, just characters. Pre-literate Mandarin-speaking children know that 在 and 再, 做 and 坐 represent different words, so characters are obviously not necessary to the spoken language. You could say the same about English "there," "they're," "their," etc.
