Upvoting a post is done by responding to a post and just writing 'cool!' or 'haha'. To do this, click the post number left of the blue arrow on the first line of a post and it will be included in your comment. Down-voting is also done with replies, but you comment something negative like 'loser!', 'sage', or 'pff, yeah as if'.
So you see the number or responses you get doesn't tell the full story; you have to check what people are writing too. But the community is mostly friendly and if you put effort into expressing yourself, I'm sure people will like you for who you are.
