It used to be only the people really really into islam gave a shit. At times in history people have given a shit but there was vertually always an ulterior motive.
Then the satanic verses came out and suddenly out of nowhere it became a super big deal to depict muhammad.
Then people stopped caring for awhile.
South park depicted muhammad and nobody cared because their depiction was positive. It was only after somebody depicted muhammad negatively that somebody rboke out their quran, realized this was technically a sin, and got all butthurt about it.
Then some muslism started going after cartoonists and it resulted in leftists apologizing for causing them to murder cartoonists, while tut tuting about how the cartoonists lack of religious sensitivity basically meant he has the murder coming.
The muslims saw that with leftists, violence is an effective strategy, and started employing it regularly against people that negatively portrayed their religion.
