Downhill turning point: Hard to pinpoint exactly.. but in my opinion, the last great season was 7, but season 8 still had some good episodes. After season 8 it went rapidly downhill (of course, there are some good episodes and jokes after, just far fewer)

yeah but that's only because we can talk about it on the internet and you can be exposed to the kind of plebs that like it
We all like the simpsons because we watched it when we were kids and have the nostalgia
There won't be a show like it again because we can never go back and watch something with kid glasses
Then watch it as adults and have a completely different experience of it while still experiencing nostalgia

Not saying Maude was an important character and all but her death really changed and marked a turning point in the series. I split the show into pre-Maude and Post-Maude with her death being the line that separates the two.
