What's the deal with Anericans asking "do you mind if I do X?" and the other person saying "yes". Doesn't that mean they do mind and don't agree? I see this a lot on Pawn Stars.
BTFO
Of course you should say "no, I don't mind" and often that is what is said, but sometimes the question comes as "You don't mind if I" and then it's the opposite.
And either way if someone has a facial expression and tone indicating that it's okay it doesn't really matter what word they use.
It depends on who you're asking, but generally speaking; this is how it goes
YES. I DO MIND! = don't do it!
NO. I DON'T MIND! = do it, go ahead!
It's a weird phrase, most Americans agree.
whenever i see a foreigner whos language i know or am somewhat familiar with make a mistake in english it's always cute because i can point out exactly why they made that mistake
it's based on the tone of their voice more than anything
