We have many loan words from not only England but also various countries Portuguese origin:煙草(tabaco), 合羽(capa), 南瓜(Camboja)、歌留多(carta), カステラ(castella), 金平糖(confeito), 襦袢(gibão), 如雨露( jorro), 天麩羅temporas)etc Dutch origin:お転婆(ontembaar), オルゴール(orgel), どんたく(zondag)、ポン酢(pons), バッテラ(bateira) etc German origin:ゼッケン(Zeichen), Bombe(ボンベ), ガーゼ(Gaze), ルンペン(Lumpen), ワッペン (Wappen) etc ・・・・ Russian origin: イクラ(икpa), カンパ (кaмпaния зa cбop дeнeг). アジト(aгитпyнкт) ハゲ先生がやたら目立つな

There are some that are not so big on foreigners. So no, it's not just a meme. I've read that Tokyo and large cities are more tolerant, while rural areas are more insular. Incidentally this is also how it is in the US.

I believe you, I'm just impressed. I guess learning without formal structure or guidance, even if it is slower or less efficient, should give you a better intuitive understanding of the language.
Taking liberties is the right way to go about translation, at least with Japanese media.
