I saw a screening of this followed by a Q&A with Tarr and it was great. Don't think the movie would be quite as impactful when not watched in a theater, though.

I cannot believe the nonentity Tarr receives any sort of praise.

Mediocre. Fakes realism with easy platitudes( the thing you are mocking) coupled with some puffed up tense-looking but really a very loose type of filming. Do that and voila you've tricked the film school elite into creaming their pants over you.

me too... was it in Amsterdam?

Yes. Did you ask any questions? Do you know if there are any recordings of the Q&A available? I saw a lot of people recording.

yes I asked the question about Gyorgy Feher
didn't think anybody else from Sup Forums would be there!
I recorded it in parts

You spent eight hours watching a movie and the best critique you could come up for it was in the format of a shitpost?

>tfw this wont get as many replies as leddit tier bait threads about capeshit or w/e

why do people care so much about things being edgy?

is it because of back in the 2000s when people made fun of the mall goths and shit, and now people are so self conscious about dark emotions they can't even be associated with art that they didn't even make?

Why don't you go drown yourself in the river you little monkey fuck?

>didn't think anybody else from Sup Forums would be there!
Me neither!

IIRC you said you hadn't heard of Feher before. What prompted you to ask Tarr about him? Have you seen any of Feher's films since?

>What prompted you to ask Tarr about him?
they worked together on a couple of films

>IIRC you said you hadn't heard of Feher before.
I actually have, I guess my nerves got the best of me and spilled some spaghetti there while asking the question.
I wanted to ask him about Szurkulet specifically but I didn't know how to formulate it without mentioning it was my favorite film so I made the great choice of asking him about Feher instead and turns out he was dead

Have you seen them?

Ah, I got the impression you noticed his name during the credits and decided to ask your question based on that. I haven't seen any of his movies. I'll watch Szurkulet. What I'm seeing on Google images looks fantastic.

I asked Tarr about his long take aesthetic in relation to everything being planned out/improvisation and finding the film in editing, and whether the change in style throughout his films was based on a decision or if it came about organically. I'm still not sure whether that "fuck off" bit he quoted from Susan Sontag was also aimed at me

>8 hours
nah, its not 8 hours at 3x playback speed

I think that's the impression everyone got including Tarr who had an expression stamped on his face of 'why is this person asking me about my dead friend', I wanted to die at that moment

lol yeah I remember that, I think it was! but I thought it was a good question seeing Susan Sontag asked it too.

do you go to the cinema in Amsterdam often or was this just a once time only occasion?

I go to the cinema in Amsterdam quite often. Do you? I go to UvA so I'm in Amsterdam a few times a week anyway. Thursday I'm going to Eye for the Dario Argento career talk followed by a screening of Suspiria and Opera.

This might be painful cringe, but I just checked the Satantango page on Letterboxd and some people commented about the Eye screening of Satantango, and it included this:
And someone asked about one particular producer and if he was still friends with him, but Tarr said that that guy died 12 years ago. So it was an extremely weird question."

t-that's more embarrassing for them because they didn't even know who he was, he wasn't just 'some producer'
And that old guy that asked him about filming cows was far more embarrassing, trying to get chuckles from the audience

Not very much, just when there is something special, I watched Werckmeister Harmonies and Marketa Lazarova, but in general I'm more into experimental cinema and there isn't much of that here unfortunately
do you ever go to the irc chat? would be fun to talk about movies (oldfag here)

What did he/you ask exactly? What did he/you ask to make multiple people remember how strange it was?

The real embarrassing part was the guy who refused to walk down to get the microphone and then asked a question about basic history.

I'm not on the irc. Do you happen to be on CG or any other private trackers?

In case you want to talk experimental cinema/movies in general (which I'm only just getting into myself), please send me an email here!
[email protected]

(My name isn't Paul, by the way. It was a throwaway email that I've kept using).

the question was along the lines of:
'I've seen the producer of Satantango was Gyorgy Feher, do you still keep in contact with him and how is he'
to which Tarr replies
'he died 12 years ago'
*crickets*
*everybody falls silent*
'but he was a crazy guy and a great friend of mine'
and he also talked a bit about how making him a producer was a scheme to make him money and that he made great movies, so the answer was quite interesting at least

oh lol you're the person I sent the Robert Beavers link to!

I was about to say someone sent me a Robert Beavers movie yesterday.

What a strange world of coincidences we live in.

>implying OP watched the movie
giving him way too much credit

I watched it three times :)

it was a nice nap

The notion of meeting people from Sup Forums IRL terrifies me.

futaki is literally me

Tell us about yourself.

That's because you're genuinely autistic kid who thinks of Sup Forums as some kind of personal "secret" place when in fact its only an entertaining and informative website that shouldn't be taken too seriously, ever.

hey now

Just for the record, I ain't one of those two. But I'm glad that they get to know each other. Take it easy friendo and be more open about it when you see potential in other people, people like that are rare.

>HURRR I'M REDUCING A FILM WHICH IS PRIMARILY A VISUAL MEDIUM TO IT'S "POLITICAL" MESSAGE BECAUSE ALL I SEE IS POLITICS AND IT MAKES ME NERVOUS IF I SEE SOMETHING I DON'T AGREE WITH

>informative website
Memes aside- I seriously hope you are joking here because otherwise you need to kill yourself immediatelly, pal.

You haven't been here for long, have you?

g-get schwifty, Bela *buuuurp*

who would win in a fight between bela tarr and lav diaz

...

Why is he writing to himself??

>HURR I'M REDUCING A POST TO IT'S POLITICAL MESSAGE BECAUSE ALL I SEE IS POLITICS AND IT MAKES ME NERVOUS IF I SEE SOMETHING I DON'T AGREE WITH

This movie doesn't seem very entertaining.

For the same reason I'm writing to myself right now I guess.

Because I am a massive faggit plz rape my face

WTF IS HAPPENING????? OH GOD...

>In Bela Tarr's seven-hour episodic film, inhabitants of a small village in Hungary deal with the effects of the fall of Communism.

Christ, sounds like torture

It's targeted for advanced masochists, maybe you're not part of that group.

In that case, go to youtube.

>not writing to yourself

Are you the guy who recommended me Kelemen's Frost a long while ago, when we did those /cinema/ generals?

Why are all the psyop shills starting to post all in caps recently? Is it because they're losing ground?

Dude this movie really made me think, such a masterpiece for intellectuals. It's a shame "normies" will never get it.

>go into a copypasta shitposting thread
>discover a tender friendship forming between dutch arthouse enthusiasts

Tarr was born two years after Stalin died

>he never got to witness Josef in action
Sad!

All Hungarian films are depressing as fuck.

Except the comedy flicks that are trash-tier... or the old pre-socialism ones that are actually quite decent (but no one would watch them anyway).

t. Hungarian

this
what a cute thread

It surprisingly is quite entertaining and easy to watch.
