TRUST. ME. The rule is how much money you need to live per month (housing, food, hobbies, gay furry porn commissions, clothing, etc.) and subtract it by 1000. Then multiply that number by 36, and that's how much money you should have to retire.

That makes no sense. What I heard was that you should be able to live off of 4% of your investments since that's how much the s&p returns on average after inflation
That's the proper way, but my version is the minimum if you want to be risky and don't want to save any money or travel anywhere.

I mean, let's say you need to spend 4k a month for some reason, and get a part time job that pays you 1k per month, that 3k * 36 = 108k which would last you 3 years.
And what about after that?

farming is hard work, and there are many things that can go wrong. Plus you still have to pay tax, unless you want to get in trouble with the law. Even if you could successfully evade it you wouldn’t have access to healthcare.

I didn't mean full-scale farming, just enough for a family. One could work a simple job in town for what money they need, for example. In some places you don't have to pay tax if your income is low enough.
