How did a bunch of friends in their mid-20's to early-30's afford to live in such trendy, spacious NYC apartments?

Tv show magic?

What were their professions?

Chandler dated an older chick?

I respect him even more now

Early 90s economy.

It was the 90s. People had so much more potential to make something of themselves and live comfortably in the 90s.

did you even watch the show?
rich jew parents. duh.

Chandler was the patrician choice

I lived on the upper west side in a rent control apartment in the 90's. It was 800 a month and a 1 bedroom.
They claimed it was rent controll which is bullshit because after the original tenant dies so does the cheap rent

topkek. minimum wage in ny state was like $2.45/hr in 92.

>28 and still live with my parents

>yfw Japs have to live with their parents well into their 30s because of the insane rent in Tokyo

My point still stands

At least you've dated and have had gf's, right?

Early Chandler>Ross>Joey=Rachel>>>Late Chandler>Monica>>>>>>>>>Phoebe

That's demonstrably wrong.

Okay, go ahead and get a full time job, on which you can raise a family then.

they were jews

Y-yeah of course haha

>chandler is the youngest
>looks the worst today
damn

drink in moderation

ahahaha. how is life in mommas basement dear ubermensch?

>>he's too poor for school

poorfag

Naw, it was Sup Forums magic. My bf works on wall street and his apartment is the size of Ross's closet. There's no way any 90s sitcom character could actually afford the apartment they live in.

Creepy as fuck anyway.
>I have my five friends already, I'm not talking to you.
Like some weird autism cult.

Teenage girls like it because this is literally how they are of course.

>Monica was sub-letting the apartment from her grandmother.

>Ross has a Ph.D. and always had a legit job.

>Chandler had a great paying job for the most part.

>Phoebe, Joey, and Rachel always rented a room.

Dank meme, call me a virgin in your next post perhaps

>Like that does or means shit these days

There is always to an extent a degree of 'artistic freedom' on tv shows, but they to an extent reflect reality.

>having friends is creepy
wat

They admitted it was artistic freedom because they needed a big apartment for shots of everyone hanging out.

the way the show portrays it is. unless you're in college there's almost never a situation where you are living with a BFF next to your other best friends and have a brother and other friend who drop in all the time

>Ross has a Ph.D
So he's broke, then?

Joey was on a popular Soap and Phoebe survived as a homeless teen. They're a lot more resourceful than their appearances would let you believe.

>Chandler
Had a well paying job
>Joey
Had a well paying job when he got work. Chandler helped me out a lot
>Ross
Had a well paying job and lived in cheaper part of town
>Phebe
Lived in cheaper part of town with her grandma
>Monica and Rachael
They were living illegally in Monica's grandma's rent controlled apartment.

didn't chandler have a middle class office job? That's like a 5k a month apartment. The rent controlled apartment makes sense though I guess.

MONICA WAS 5 YEARS OLDER THAN CHANDLER?! What's the source on this?

Because they didn't suffer from this modern fucking millenial syndrome and were actually hard workers who didn't expect the world to be handed to them on a platter.

You alright, man?

I want to put my dick inside _____

>tfw 24 still at home trying to get through school

I wish I had friends like that but I'm also glad I don't have to work a shitty waiter job for the rest of my life like these guys

The cost of rent in 90s NY was much cheaper than what it is now.

Purchasing power was also higher in the 90s - you could get more 'bang for your buck'

Same thing with any show set in modern San Fran when the character isn't a tech executive or some such.

Overall expenses were cheaper too in the 90s, adjusted to inflation

Wow those ages are completely wrong. Monica was the same age as Rachael. Ross was the older brother. Phoebe may have been older but not very much older than a few years than Rachael or monica

They're gay?

makes even less sense for the HIMYM characters. Ted and Marshall didn't even have a job at the beginning.

offical friends power ranking

>joey
>chandler
>monica
>rachel
>pheebs
>ross

The people posting in this thread have never actually watched Friends in its entirety have they?

I have a friend who teaches just outside the city and keeps telling me I should move there because there's basically a sea of women falling over themselves for actually straight men. I can't afford it, but I can't afford not to.

I'd tell you to move to Oakland, but that would be a very bad idea.

Admit it, you just wanna go 'cause you're a closet fag and it's like Mecca to you people.

I have a friend who just got a teaching job there and is moving in August. But he's also married. And he has very little will power. I don't expect the marriage to last.

I did. They all got pretty high class jobs towards the end.

You're not supposed to think about that. Obviously an apartment like that in NY would start at $10k a month easily.

What really kills me about the show is that would bomb if it released today. It'd be cast as a racist sitcom and the internet would explode with fury. I miss the days of Friends. Before they started WAY over-doing the laugh track and when you didn't have to include diversity because everyone's so sensitive.

>San Fran
Don't. It's a dirty shithole and nothing like the paradise you see on Full House.

Pretty sure it's their real ages, not the characters.

This is the most accurate list I've seen. At the very least any list should have Joey at the top and Ross at the absolute bottom

>when you didn't have to include diversity
>first episode of the first season
>lesbian fucks up main character's marriage and takes away his only child

My friend is on the North side, just as you're getting into wine country. Teaches piano at an expensive-as-fuck private school and plays jazz at a sushi restaurant in the city on weekends. It looks hella nice where he actually lives.

>Out of all the characters introduced, there's one instance of a gay person
And? Next you're going to say (((they))) did this.

>just realized I'm their age
>I don't have a sex life even remotely comparable
>I don't have a job
>I haven't finished school
>I'm still living with my parents
>I have zero friends
fuck me, dude, I'm truly fucked

>And? Next you're going to say (((they))) did this.
they literally did

(((martha kauffman)))
(((david crane)))

If you're that old, get off Sup Forums grandpa.

>he fell for the Joey meme

>Japan is just Tokyo

wow you are literally me man

want to be friends?

Wait, but Chandler and Ross were roommates.

What does minimum wage have to do with anything you uneducated fuck go back to watching cartoons

>Not the plastic thing that was formerly courtney cox
Wew

SO NO ONE TOLD YA LIFE WAS GONNA BE THIS WAAAAAAAY

sure do
want to be F.R.I.E.N.D.S ?

I like the apartments in HIMYM better

Such a shame. She was an angel back in the day

IIIIII'll be there FOR YOUUUU[\spoiler]

No, those are the ages of the actors, not the characters.
Rachel, ross, and monica all came from wealthy families, and Phoebe was a former wall street broker.
Chandler made good money at his office job, it was only joey that was the odd man out.

Dancing in the Dark is probably the best option.

Chandler's dad is a tranny, and the lesbian parents plot comes up a fuckton.
Also pretty sure there were occasional gay one off characters.

She actually unjusted herself recently

she was so qt in masters of the universe

>ross at the bottom
This is magnanimously incorrect
Ross is always number 1 then chandler then joey then monica. Rachel and phoebe can fluctuate at the bottom.

Rachel had rich parents and then worked at Ralph Lauren

Monica and Ross are Jewish and both had pretty decent jobs (head chef at fancy restaurant and professor at prestigious college, respectively)

Chandler had a comfy office job and if I remember correctly was even promoted a few times

Joey was basically a failed actor but Chandler always supported him financially.

Phoebe was a masseuse and not a particular popular one it seemed, but she often alluded to prostitution so I wouldn't be surprised if Phoebe was giving at least happy endings. Plus I think she had some inheritance from her grandmother or someone.

Plus most of them roommated, which cuts rent in half, and the 90s economy was good.

Definitely doable.

he had jew parents and had good high school grades

Real life?

Actually remember that at some points Phoebe would play her guitar for money, wasnt she homeless or something at some point?

Switch Joey/chandler and Ross/Rachel and that's me, but it is arguable so good list

yeah rachel was annoying as fuck sometimes, at least she was cute tho.

The ubiquity of her haircut got a bit much after a bit.

I've watched it all the way through two times and I've seen random episodes multiple times because if it's on I'll usually watch a few episodes. I'm in the minority of people that think it's better than Seinfeld.

dem nips

washingtonpost.com/graphics/entertainment/unrealistic-nyc-apartments/?utm_term=.1f635eeb1fd6

Monica owned the apartment

Chandler and Ross had very good jobs

Rachel and Joey were scraping by before they got their jobs, and probably helped financially by the other guys

Pheobe is a high end escort on the side

>Ross
>Chandler
>Joey

>Pheebs
>Monica
>Rachel

I'd suggest you look into cost of living and inflation you fucking moron. The federal MINIMUM at the time was $4.25 you lying sack of shit
dol.gov/whd/minwage/chart.htm
Which in 2017 dollars is $7.50. Now factor in "real wages"/cost of living and you'd have a better understanding, probably equivalent now of $9-$10 and hour today.

Dude what? The Bay Area is arguably the single worst dating market for men in the entire western world. Tech is extremely male dominated and lucrative, and the few women who do work in that environment tend to be awful looking. This creates a situation where you have a colossal number of rich and incredibly thirsty men fighting over a handful of 6/10s at best. In addition to that, you have tons of foreigners working in tech who are generally either married our outright terrible looking Pajeets and Asians who aren't westernized at all. If you're just a regular, straight white guy who isn't killing it on the tech scene the Bay is the ultimate nerd sausage fest.

I haven't met a woman I fucked that didn't a full set of Friends DVD, why do women like Friends so much?

>tryhard Chad
>Beta male
>Beta male

I own the Friends box set and bought each season of Seinfeld as it became available. I reckon I saw every episode of both before I bought the DVDs too. I am a connoisseur and easily see that Seinfeld is on another level to Friends, but Friends was often very funny despite becoming putting out genuinely unwatchable storylines by the time it died e.g. Phoebe's silly running style, Joey's attempt learning French. Also, Friends stole numerous Seinfeld stories.

Seinfeld was more consistent, even when LD left, and the best episodes were way better than Friends's best episodes.

But neither is as good as the Simpsons S3-10!

andd in terms of aesthetics first seasons Joey powergapped them all and the worst was Phoebe

without her the show would be much better

The only ones with spacious apartments were Jews.

Friends >>> Seinfeld

I don't care who disagrees. In your heart you know it's true.

I'll never understand why Ross the largest Friend, simply doesn't eat the others
