Daniel Jenkins
Thai here, it's even more complicate than That.
First Thai (kadai) is its own family of language. We have some element that closer to Chinese (the melody tone) but overall we are very unique.
Then... came the buddhist, we adopt some Pali and Sanskrit. Hence, Indian influenced.
And not long ago, just before WWII. Our country tried to Westernize. The leader at the time feel like our language is not classy enough. So they adopt some Khom in to our language too.... after that It become the Thai language as we know it today.
Bonus point, many Thai also came from Chinese heritage (me too). Though we are spoke mostly Thai now... the accent are still shown for some people.
Also... super bonus point... for the one that still spoke Chinese... The dialect are mostly Teochew mix with Hokkien. The result is we could not communicate with Teocheow or Fujian in Chinese either. One of my friend who still could trace the route to Choushan has to communicate by Cantonese.
Ian Allen
