This is how a small Jersey crew would operate. As much as they like to self-aggrandize, the American mafia is still only about as powerful as big time crack dealing nigger gangs in inner cities. Maybe a bit more organized with more of an established hierarchy, but not much better than that.
I'd say the Sopranos covers that fairly realistically. They aren't big time guys. Just guys making a decent living hustling, moving stolen products, running a few businesses, and shaking people down on loans. I don't even recall them moving drugs....

The Soprano family being pathetic is literally the most common theme in this show. you ever wonder why Tony's always saying things like "this would have never happened in the old days" or how he's always talking about the old school mobsters? he desperately wants to get the family back to that state but at every turn he ends up compromising, whether it be how the Ginny issue was solved or how Feetch was taken care of, they knew in this day and age they were as powerful as they used to be, and to uphold any sense of power they had left they'd need to compromise, even if it meant throwing the old rule book out the window.
