The weirdest PDC major ever comes to a close today as Butlin's Minehead will more than likely be hosting its last ever PDC event. With the complete absence of fans, no Skyline Arena being used, and all the former playing champions being knocked out early, the 2018 UK Open will remembered for simultaneously being the best and worst tournament ever. A new major finalist could be on the cards as the QF draw put all the big names together.
Kicking off the last 8 is the least predictable match between Shropshire's David Pallett and Scumbag Brother Steve West. This is Pallett's first big stage action in just over 2 years, and has taken out three big names in Robert Thornton, James Wade and Kim Huybrechts. Simply on the other hand has been less upsetting, with only the big name of Michael Smith falling victim.
2004 UK Open runner-up John Part is the only player left from Round 1 and he has been rewarded with a game against odd Welshman Robert Owen. The Canadian legend has had a lucky draw, dropping just 4 legs in his first 3 games before surviving a last leg shootout with Ron Meulenkamp and then binning Mervyn King. Stack Attack beat an amateur qualifier, two conquerors of Peter Wright in Jamie Lewis and Nathan Rafferty and then Ian White to get here.
The big names enter the fray with a rematch of last year's most hilarious game between the roarers of Welsh roidlet Gerwyn Price and Aussie bogan Corey Cadby. The Iceman survived a last leg shootout with Paul Hogan to get here, while the King has been convincing in all of his wins. This should be thrilling if nothing else.
What should have been the final is instead the QF as Rob Cross takes on Gary Anderson. Both men have been solid and although Voltage has been the more tested, Gando still has had to play to his best in a tournament where he usually struggles. If both play to the 104-5 average they displayed last night, this will be some game.
