They may have the player's NHL rights, but they're not good enough to actually sign to a contract. After a few years if there's no contract the team loses the rights and they're basically a free agent or in some special cases they can re-enter the draft and restart the process.

NHL is the highest league. They have transfer deals with every other Euro league (except KHL), so if NHL wants a player, they can sign him at any time (if they have the rights). If he doesn't play in the KHL, ofcourse

I think he will be good, honestly. Very special skillset and adds some spice to the PP that makes him very effective. That said, his weight will likely be a problem for yet a couple of years and at the moment, he is a PP babby.
