>I've just read an incredible article where "The Handmaid's Tale", a sub-par piece of science-fi trash, is defended by its author. The author, who rightly should be apologizing for her execrable prose, not only defends it but calls it "timely". The book has been made in to some sort of cable mini-series. I'm Canadian, so had to suffer through this book as a young person. It's one of those cheap, dystopian tracts. The difference with this one is it has a deeply paranoid feminist look into the future. The story is as impossible as most of these " frightening looks into the future". But to call it timely, when the possibility of this fiction ever becoming fact even more of a joke, is just a cynical cash-grab.
What the hell is happening to norm? Is he on drugs again?
Owen Evans
>Atwood continues to argue that all of the scenarios offered in The Handmaid's Tale have actually occurred in real lifeāin an interview she gave regarding Oryx and Crake, Atwood maintains that "As with The Handmaid's Tale, I didn't put in anything that we haven't already done, we're not already doing, we're seriously trying to do, coupled with trends that are already in progress.... So all of those things are real, and therefore the amount of pure invention is close to nil."[20] Atwood was also known to carry around newspaper clippings to her various interviews to support her fiction's basis in reality.[21]
Isaac Rodriguez
Again? He never quit the pills
Grayson Morgan
I usually love Norm and I have no clue what the Handmaiden's Tale is (I thought he meant the Korean movie and he is literally saying nothing here. What is the criticism?
Asher Jones
was it autism
Tyler Evans
It's a "classic" feminist book, but it's popular now because it's been turned into a show on Hulu, and leftist critics are fawning over it because, "THIS COULD REALLY HAPPEN!"
Jace Stewart
All political bullshit aside, the biggest problem with the piece is that is so its pretty much misery porn, kinda like 13 Reasons...or even 1984 or Brazil.
Nathaniel Thompson
That's not criticism. You being triggered isn't criticism.
Jaxon Flores
But Brazil is hilarious.
Andrew Parker
handmaid's tale is a feminist-dystopian novel written by margaret atwood, like Norm a Canadian, in which religious fundamentalists start up their own society and use handmaidens as "surrogate" birth mothers for powerful men since all their regular wives are barren
Dominic Wright
But the thing is, you'd have to be a complete idiot to think it could actually happen.
Nolan Morris
He's right the book is trash.
Joshua Turner
you tell me
Jordan Brooks
I respect Norm enough to assume this is true. But I've never heard of the Handmaid's Tale. also: >reading
Jackson Richardson
>disliking something
WOW TRIGGERED MUCH ???? XD BLUMPFH BTFO
Andrew Sullivan
Atwood is a hack
hes right
Jose Myers
Norm's a brilliant comic but he seems to think he's Harold Bloom now that he's published an above-average celebrity memoir
Elijah Fisher
Top tier memoir right here.
John Jenkins
she just combined islam + mormon fundamentalism. it's spec fec like 1984 or Brave New World. there's certain artistic liberties to be taken with a grain of salt.
If 90% of women were barren, or 90% of men sterile, society would get weird to make the human race survive.
Aiden Phillips
This, Steve is a decent writer.
Adam Cox
norm is righteous
Jackson Bennett
>Oh my god Donald Trump made a frat boy joke 10 years ago I'm so terrified women are going to be enslaved forever under his regime oh my god *literally shakes*....I guess The Handmaid's Tale isn't so fictional after all! >Oh, they want to bring in fifty million bajillion muslim immigrants who actually enslave their women and treat them like cattle? Sounds fantastic I see no issues whatsoever.
Easton Adams
HE'S SHITPOSTING ALL OVER TWITTER
Sebastian Cooper
literally our guy
Ayden Wood
I got into this exact argument with the literature professor who made me read this book. He said it was completely realistic and possible that right wingers would machine gun down congress and take over the country by force to enact some kind of religious patriarchy.
Isaiah Brooks
>What do I care if it's well-regarded. I have eyes to read. Everyone but me is welcome to love it. But I am right.
Is Norm the perfect human?
Jayden Rogers
Well he's not wrong, it IS happening, but if you point out where and who the reviewer would probably start singing a very different tune.
Landon Reed
When did Norm decide that he isn't gonna be funny anymore and that his opinions on everything are important?
I enjoyed his book but I would burn it if I knew it meant Norm was gonna be a critic or """""intellectual""""" instead of a comic. Is this why he doesn't do the show anymore?
ok you have 4 years to get your shit together and prevent this otherwise you have 8. Why did the left lose its goddamn mind
Landon Johnson
There is literally nothing dystopian about this scenario.
Samuel Ortiz
>pizzagate memester accusing anyone of losing their mind
Grayson Phillips
>Still no new podcast episodes.
Nolan Perry
>pajiba Jesus christ, I haven't visited that shithole in years. Started out as a place for overly critical reviews of shitty Hollywood movies but it slowly morphed into political discourse over time when liberal proles built a nest in the comments section and just never left. From what I remember the guy that owns the place was raised by two gay dads and made a point to shit up the comment section whenever it would veer away from the liberal hivemind.
They also gave a positive review to Dark Knight Rises.
Jose Lee
kek if he actually said this.
Jason Campbell
New york times best seller bwoi
Hudson Brown
>They also gave a positive review to Dark Knight Rises. Is there something wrong with that?
Mason Walker
He's right, and he said it better than I ever could.
I've been cringing every time I hear someone call this show "timely" since women have more rights now then ever before, and they are even starting to subvert men, but somehow we are apparently on the verge of enslaving them? Pure feminist propaganda.
Jace Cruz
The book is pretty overwrought politically but I like it as simple sci-fi. I think she does a good job of describing a fictional world. I know I'm supposed to be freaked by the christfaggotry and knee dampness but reading about Ofglen's calm & regimented world soothed my autism. She really should have left the bullshit academic conference at the end out though, an ambiguous end would be better.
I like Moss and her walleyed charms so I'll give it a watch. Felt a bit burned by TMITHC so hopefully it's a better adaptation.
>But to call it timely, when the possibility of this fiction ever becoming fact even more of a joke, is just a cynical cash-grab. He's not wrong, but neither is she - Christian Dominionists aren't joking. She didn't really go into theology in the book which is a shame. She made it seem like no one really believed which made her point and undercut it at the same time.
Liam Kelly
Not sure why, but I read this thread in Pigeon's voice
Christian Cox
I've read the book too. Norm is right. It should be bundled with 1984 as the "I can't believe we lost an election" commemorative edition at Starbucks whenever republicans win
Aiden Garcia
What is the series/book about?
Zachary Gray
1984 is scarily close to coming true, though.
Levi King
Mostly about fried chicken and donuts
and ice cream and chocolate cake
and pizza and potato chips
Isaac Reyes
In what way?
Jayden Lopez
In the UK, yes.
Grayson Lewis
Norm becoming the new Goodyear Blimp is also close to becoming true
Christopher Adams
t. edgemaster
Easton Diaz
In the UK it already HAS come true, I'd say.
Mainly all the government surveillance and the ways in which media propaganda control how people think about shit. We're a hop, skip, and a jump from 1984.
Isaiah Thomas
>Christian Dominionists aren't joking. No, they aren't. But even they don't aim to create the kind of society Atwood depicts
Jaxson Butler
Is this real? Damn norm is overdosing on redpills.
Jack Nelson
are you kidding? literally everything Norm does makes me laugh.
Jace Powell
It already happened and people happily embraced it years ago.
Isaac Ramirez
No it isn't.
Anthony Stewart
kek are you his doctor?
Easton Ortiz
at least it's not Ayn Rand.

But identity politics has broken monopolistic control over the masses - they don't all listen to the same media anymore; they are divided in their views. Their opinions are less controllable. Although this has resulted in a rise in fear-mongering in the mass media.....
Mason Kelly
See I have no idea why so many people are assblasted in this thread. I've loved norm long before I came on Sup Forums and anyone who knows him is used to him having strong opinions on subjects. I don't really agree with him on a lot of things, but I always enjoy his perspective. Like this guy obviously a bandwagoning faggot if doesn't think norm hasn't always been this way.
Luis Fisher
>people think the handmaids tale is an impossible scenario But we literally live in a world where societies like that already exist, and nobody cares. Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Sudan, Nigeria, hell pretty much every muslim majority country AND soon the UK, France and Germany will be too. Handmaids tale is only about christians because Atwood knew she couldnt sell it to liberals if it was about muslims, but make no mistake, The Handmaids tale is all about sharia law.
Carson Rogers
This like a mf
Isaiah Green
I saw him live in Chicago a couple weeks ago
man, he's been hitting the bottle hard
Aaron Bennett
Absolutely. How dare anyone have an opinion without first becoming an award-winning professional in the field they wish to critique. I mean, I'm only interested in your opinions about how good a lay your mother is, because you have so much experience with that.
Adrian Lee
I love this man.
Lucas Young
I love this man.
The Handmaiden's Tale is hysterical trash, Margret Atwood is a narcissistic cunt, the fact that they're marketing it as 'timely' indicates that this was made for the wrong reasons.
Ryder Parker
He's right on the money here, though.
Brayden Cook
this
he also worships Jake Tapper
Bentley Lewis
Also he's too scared to learn to drive. He has never driven a car, ever.
Brandon Bennett
> are you his doctor? that guy is a broken record
Jackson Taylor
What? Didn't he drive some hero of his around who ignored him? I thought he worked as a limo driver for a bit
Christian Wood
I'm the same way. I'm not that much an autist, nor do I really have anxiety, I just don't feel comfortable piloting a literal ton of metal.
Jayden Myers
It's completely worth sitting through Norm livetweeting every sports event he cares about just to be there when he goes off on Margaret Atwood again.
Chase Bell
Does the left honestly think that the nationalistic wave sweeping across the West is motivated by fundamentalist Christianity instead of nationalism?
Anxiety that prevents you from acting like a normal human being and enjoying the comforts of modern society is by definition a mental illness.
Nicholas Morales
She wrote Handmaid's Tale in 1985. Christianity was definitely more of a driving force (at least in America) in the 80s and 90s than today.
Carter Barnes
BASED
Xavier Howard
Well considering how those tend to go hand in hand with "muh morals, degeneracy this degeneracy that" whining from the right...
David Howard
Can you post any Christian literature from ~1985 that advocates for this type of society?
Gavin Young
Do you believe there's a real War on Christmas? I.e. Christian values? The right wingers still seem to think so.
Leo Turner
You're wrong, he's always been like this. Look up what he said about Bret Easton Ellis.
This.
Mason Ortiz
I'll stick with logic, ty.
Aaron Kelly
She's not saying in that interview that that stuff is happening. She's saying it's historically happened, which is probably more or less true.
Thomas Peterson
How can one man be so based?
(((awards)))
Owen Lopez
There is nothing normal or natural about cars. Stop believing what the man crams down your throat and open your fucking eyes for once you god damn sheep.
Colton Reyes
>now
I'm pretty sure reading books is all he does all day and has been his entire life. He's shit on plenty of authors in the past.
Isaac Thomas
>you'd have to be a complete idiot to think it could actually happen
Broheim, it's called a dystopian novel for a reason. Just because it might not seem likely today doesn't mean it couldn't happen in some form in the future. People laughed at Orwell and Huxley for their books being ridiculous and over the top, yet now we live in a hybrid of the two, with mass media dulling our senses and privacy being a joke thanks to the government spying on us through datamining.
