The Japanese don't 'singularize' by default, whereas in English we 'pluralize' or 'group' by default.
Whenever we use nouns they are always referring to the largest possible (or most general) case.

>alone and talking to himself. ~のだ sounds a little strange choice of modality in monologue, but I guess it's possible. It implies strong determination of the speaker and makes the sentence sound definite. ~ぞ has the similar effect as well. Both sentences show the speaker's strong refusal or denial.
Some black dude from Britain taught himself to speak very good Japanese. He went and worked for Square Enix or some shit translating games. It's possible
