My study routine is all recognition and no recall. I just do 10 new cards of Core 6k a day and then take notes on Tae Kim grammar for a bit. What should I add to my studying? I'm finding that I forget how to write certain kanji but have no trouble recognizing them in flashcards.

If you're new, children's books. Get the graded readers from the CoR. Move on from those as soon as you can.

What the 上, 中 and 下 under the months mean here?
Blake Long
上旬 じょうじゅん The first part of the month 中旬 ちゅうじゅん The middle part of the month 下旬 げじゅん The last part of the month
Jack Carter
>implying you never get to anyone here
Hudson Ortiz
よくじょうによくじょうする 上旬、中旬、下旬 the three divisions of a month: 上=the first 10-day period, 中=the middle 10-day period, and 下=the last 10-day period

Did he mean お八つ here and made a mistake with the kanji or am I missing something?
Joshua Jones
No, 奴 is used like that casually as kind of a generic word for something, kinda like "thing" in English.
Benjamin Thomas

“奴” a pronoun. “The one (which I ate at the shop) ” in this context.

Should I go with Minna no Nihongo or Genki? There are problems with both, and I'm not sure. Does anyone have any experiences with them? Please don't just suggest TK, as I'm already reading him.
On the one hand Genki is easy and condescending, with multiple great external resources. On the other MNN is challenging and a little dry, but written entirely in Japanese. The Anki decks are not great, though, so I'd have to make my own.
Jaxson Moore
Genki seems to be more popular why don't you just decide for yourself as you already look into both apparently
Grayson Smith
Don't use textbooks.
Michael Evans
Do what has the best resources to help you learn, and what you think you'll get through the fastest. It looks like that's Genki, even if it's "condescending."

2bh just drop this idea entirely, it's mostly just memes or total scams that promise you shit like fluency in one year with their super duper special technique for 19.99 you can cram some basics into your head with mnemonics, but that's about it

what about kanjidamage, since it's free? or should I just use vocabulary to learn?

I do want to learn 書道 at some point. If you find some good material, keep me posted. I tried looking on youtube some time ago, but I didn't find anything all that note worthy. Didn't really dig too deep though.

Who /ready/ for the JLPT here?
Samuel Martin
Tobira is fine, since it's mostly a reader. Really most textbooks are fine if you don't mind the slower pace.
Elijah Ward
Sure. It's going to be fun, I get to do something on a Sunday afternoon at the very least.
Wyatt Wilson
Who else here is furiously reviewing their textbooks in preparation for the JLPT N1? How ready do you feel?
Aren't you the guy who got the 文部科学省 scholarship? Why would you care about the JLPT?

Yamashita-sensei, is it too ambitious to try and do the twelve lessons of Genki I in six weeks of self-study? I'm trying to come up with a two lesson a week plan that involves all of the exercises. I'd just like to try and not be stuck on the first book for too long.
Liam Reed
Depends how dedicated you are and if you're retaining it all or not

If someone says 普通のやつだ "It's just a normal one", and someone else replies with 普通なんですか, does that mean "You call that normal!?" or does it mean "What’s normal about it in any way?"
