What can you recommend for comics of the sword & sorcery/sword & planet genres?

What can you recommend for comics of the sword & sorcery/sword & planet genres?

I'm trying to get a better grounding in it before reading my own. So far all I've read are some Conan stories and all of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.

>What can you recommend for comics of the sword & sorcery/sword & planet genres?
Google.

*before writing my own.

There's an Elric prequel comic that Moorcock says is a good intro to the series.
Sup Sup Forums.

>All of Dark Horse Conan

>Groo
>The first 30 something issues of Red Sonja from Dynamite
>Warlord V1 and V4

Thanks!

>Sup Sup Forums.
No matter how many times you default to that response, the people you rec comics to will NEVER actually read them. Sup Forums is not love. It's a waste of everyone's time.

More like this subject is way too problematic / racist / sexist for Sup Forumsmblr. After all this genre starred masculine white male leads and beautiful women and thus are on the wrong side of history.

Red Sonja has the most useless armor ever.

If you're gonna do this, do it right and do some world building and take some common sense approaches to common tropes.

Land really needs to find new porn to trace, I've seen that same girl like 3 other times with different coloring

Mike Grell's Warlord

Early Cerebus is total sword and sorcery

Red Sonja is older than you are. Her style and tone and history are older than you are. They've updated her writing and made it more modern, but they keep her true to her roots. It's obviously not intended for you if you feel that way.

Why do faggots always bitch about bikini armor, but never complain about dudes running around in loin clothes?

fuck off tumblr

Bikini Armor would chafe really fucking bad. Loin clothes are more comfortable (though potentially scratchy but that would happen with any clothing form that period.

Is having your junk flop around as uncomfortable as trying to run without adequate boob support is? Because it's really not fun, and most bikini armor doesn't remotely provide the ladies with enough support.

but honestly it's comics and I'm happy when everyone's scantily clad

Would the Fell's Five comics count? D&D fantasy, dunno if that's still in the range you're looking at.

Some of the older Magic the Gathering comics, specifically the Ice Age miniseries, also have some of those elements.

I would assume that the chain is over some form of leather, not directly on the skin.
Really, support is the biggest problem outside minimal protection. Like you said though, it's comics.

You're being really defensive. Being older than someone doesn't make something immune from criticism. The genre's basically fucked. And yeah no shit Red Sonja's older than me, the Conan series takes place 10,000 years ago, you retard.

The first volume of Drak Horse's Conan is a must read. The Marvel stuff, at least early on, is also solid.

>Specially King Conan
>The first 30 something issues of Red Sonja from Dynamite

OP, ignore this faggotry.

It's not that it's objectifying, it's just plain useless. It's covering very little of her body, and if the idea is to allow freedom of movement, Leather or cloth will work better. Chain Mail underwear looks sexy but it's useless as both clothing and armor. It's like you missed a payment on your full suit of armor and they repossessed what you didn't pay for.

The recent Dark Horse series have been pretty good
Conan The Cimmerian - good mix of Sword and Sorcery
Conan the Barbarian - all sword no sorcery, younger Conan. Essentially Conan Begins.
Conan the Avenger - Back to the sword and sorcery. This page is from there.
also check out the podcast Skald. It's a great sword and sorcery story

It is a known fact that all women can do magic because of vaginas. You don't need armor when your moon blood rituals let you cast a ward.

Okay, that's pretty funny.

Not OP here but gonna start DH conan. How does the quality change when busiek dips?

THIS is why. Fuck off with that shit, and actually read the fucking comic before you claim to know better on here.

Point is over you head. Red Sonja, Conan, John Carter, all of these things were written in an older era for people with different values from your own.

Red Sonja is sexy, so what? Because it's not realistic armor? Nobody cared back then, it was fun. Just because you don't like it now, doesn't mean the world should bend to your way. It's not intended for people who can't understand it. Wearing nothing but panties and lacy bra in the kitchen isn't practical either, but that doesn't stop models and photographers from going to town on that. Same thing going on here, except it's in a fantasy world. Men and women like the ideas like this. Lots of beautiful women out there love to cosplay Red, and characters like her, you're going to tell them it's not realistic? They know that, and they don't care, because it's about being sexy and having fun. Fantasy is for adults too, not just children.

Conan's great. I'd also recommend Elfquest and the old DC D&D comics, as well. And for more lighthearted fare, check out Mouse Guard.

This.

Finally reading this for the first time now and it's really good.

Mouseguard even has a giant snake in it.

WEll I don't wanna tell you how the world works, but writing for an early 20th century Audience might not be the best idea. Writing should be informed by the zeitgeist. And the Zeitgeist says metal bikinis are old hat.

Wheel of Time: New Spring mini series and Wheel of Time: Eye of the World series (30+ issues)

The fuck is sword and planet?

A sub genre

Annoyingly they don't have this on comiXology only the (admitidly pretty good) new 52 run

I need to find a place to pirate it.

Red Sonja is great

Not at Dynamite it fucking isn't.

Cerebus is my favorite High Fantasy comic

That's not entirely true. They did a lot of good stuff, there's like over 100 issues, plus mini series and stuff like Queen Sonja [only series I haven't read]. On average they're nothing fantastic, but fun books to read if you're looking for some classic sword & sorcery stuff. Their first "reboot" like 30 something issues in where they kill of Sonja and imply that she's basically The Slayer, in every generation blah blah, was kind of weird, but even that eventually was retconned.

So far the newest version, issue 4 out today, is alright. I like her redesign but the story and art is kinda meh, a whole lot of nothing has happened so far.

What are good runs of Red Sonja?

Dynamite first volume is cool.
Simone's run was fun / bretty gud
Queen of the Frozen Waste is nice, but a bit disapointing (I thought I was about Sonja being a Barbarian Queen, but it was not)

Also, all of the old marvel Red Sonja books are cool and have nice art, but you really have to be into this style.

Search for torrents? That's what I did and I have the entire first volume plus the annual on my flash drive. IIRC, the torrent that I found had all three volumes, including the nu52 one.

I really wished that DC would just reprint the first trade in color. You can't reprint that shit in black & white, you just can't.

Planetary romance. Really out of fashion right now sadly.

Define "planetary romance".

...

>masculine white male leads
Off the top of my head... Imaro is black and the star of a series. Fafhrd was raised by his mother, lived in her tent until he was eighteen, and to sing and speak in a high pitch voice.

And it's not like there weren't PLENTY of badass women in S&S. I mean, one of the earlier examples was Jirel of Joiry, who was a woman.

I would imagine it's sword'n'sorcery, but with a sci-fi twist.

*and trained from a young age to sing and...

Shit like John Carter of Mars. Badass swordfights on strange planets. Usually the main character is a man from earth.

I agree, those stories are on the wrong side of history. Also when will Conan FINALLY be black?

>zeitgeist

You fucking dullard, acting like you think you know the world, acting like you know what zeitgeist even means. You think today's is better than the past? The zeitgeist does not improve, it does not get better, it just changes form. It is an artifact of history, you can write in the past, you can write in the now.

YOU say that metal bikinis are dumb
YOU think the writing should be changed to fit YOUR idea
Yes, lots of people out there agree with you.
Yes, lots of people out there disagree with you. Does not mean you get to define what is our modern zeitgeist.

The first run of Sonja at Dynamite is extremely good, this coming from a guy that has read all of Red Sonja ever published.

Then they kill her off and make her a sort of legacy character, and it turns to shit.

I would rather have a black Conan who has a personality more like in the books than the existing movie Conan.

No surprise from Sup Forumsmblr

The last movie Conan was pretty great though.

Sup Forums proves once again it has the most abysmal taste in everything and anything

To be clear, I'm just saying Conan acting like Conan is more important to me than his skin pigmentation. I'm not advocating they replace the Governator with a black dude and still write mediocre scripts.
In that case, I'll check it out. I hadn't bothered because the older movies never compared to the books for me.

Holy shit finally someone that agrees with me. That last movie with Jason Momoa was fucking great, he absolutely nailed it.

>out of fashion right now

It's been out of fashion decades before you were born and mostly exemplified old white people ideals of the antebellum south. Good fucking riddance to that racist shit.

lmao everyone saw that fucker

Newest canon was great, good fight scenes, and amazing sets + costumes. Critics bashed it for having cliche characters, but the entire sword and sorcery genera is guilty of that, so rather than reinvent any characters, the movie embraced all of that.

Shut up.
You know what a good one coming out is? Sword of the Earthman. It's like Princess of Mars but if John Carter was Bigfoot.

Sexist to boot. All the girls do is get kidnapped. And look pretty since they're totally naked and everything. It's pretty much a joke genre.

It's not like that's inherent to the idea of people with swords going to space and fighting. I mean, fuck, people act like S&S is some super conservative medium even though it's coming out right now and there's a series that's basically middle east S&S where one of the two protagonists is a woman, and even though Michael Moorcock, who wrote the Elric novels, is an anarchist who talked shit about Heinlein for being a fascist sympathizer and Lovecraft for being racist and misogynistic.

The fact that a lot of the writers of a genre tend to have certain ideas doesn't make those ideas innate to the genre.

This is just false.

...

Only a ton of the genre in fundamentally 'white man against the savages'. Sorry but that doesn't fly today, it's 2016 in case you didn't notice.

Downloaded an issue or two of that when it first came out. Really need to get around to reading it.

So basically you hold a hack like Moorcock in higher esteem because he set himself against that evil racist misogynist Lovecraft?

>Only a ton of the genre in fundamentally 'white man against the savages'.

So don't write it like that. You can take the elements you like and leave out the ones you don't. It's really not a complicated concept.

>It's pretty much a joke genre.
Kinda like shows about crying and singing, only more tolerable and less pretentious.

I didn't express any opinion about Moorcock's writing. I was just saying that S&S can be approached from different angles, and it doesn't necessarily all have to be founded on certain political ideas.

Slaine

But then you've fundamentally turned it into something else.

By not liking the Conan movie, agreed.

Yeah, it was a great B-movie. I wish someone made a huge, Ben-Hur type Conan movie but until that happens I'm okay with what we got.

I don't get it.

So you're saying if he landed on a planet that wasn't filled with "savages" but cities and their own history and philosophy and so on, and maybe even he was the least advanced one there, and ultimately ended up fighting some people with swords and bows and arrows and shit, it wouldn't be Sword and Planet because they aren't stand-in Native Americans?

That's absurd.

>I'm going to have a hot dog, but hold the mustard.
> WHAT IS THIS UNEARTHLY THING YOU HAVE CREATED!?!?!

Those elements are not fundamental. Simple as that.

Now if you tried to rewrite an already established universe by an author, then you'd be messing with fundamentals of THEIR universe. That's why people create new ones.

"White savior" issues aside, the movie Avatar was basically a sword & planet story about helping the natives fight against imperialism.

>then you'd be messing with fundamentals of THEIR universe

I thought Sup Forums was all in favor of this so long as it's non-whites replacing problematic (white) people?

"White Savior" issues ?
Jack only manages to save the day once he let's go of his previous life & "white culture" and goes local.

We have been having a lot of people lately asking for Sword and Sorcery recomendations, we should make a Recomendation Chart like we have for Scify.

My two cents here.

The character that Sonja was based on, an original character by Howard, was great and used to wear proper armor. I think that my problem with Red Sonja bikini armor is that it is more stupid looking and "historically inacurate" than it being impratical.

I have the same problem with Conan ALWAYS being represented with just loin clothes. On the old short stories Conan always tried to get into armor to fight his enemies, and only was on loin clothes when he was out of options or too poor to affor a proper armor. In the same vein, I would rather have Sonja running around with regular revealing feminine clothes - like some cetic women used to wear - than with a bikini of steel, that feels extremelly out of place. Hell, even a furr bikini makes more sense than a steel bikini. She could wear

This is just the Historian on me talking tho. She could still be sexy, but actually appearing to be part of a "medieval/ancient world".

>It's a Sup Forums get triggered by white men and sexy women thread
>AGAIN

The chainmail bikini isn't even her original outfit in the comics.

still love it though

Damn, that outfit just screams 70's.

Good point.

And I thought that the chain mais bikini was out of place...Geez did she just found a time portal out of the 70's?

>we should make a Recomendation Chart like we have for Scify.
We never finished the scifi chart, it's only an ugly useless work-in-progress.

Sure, let's start a new chart and have another embarrassment on our hands.
