Star Wars literally took work that was done for that film, then ran it through a simple Hero's Journey plot. Not even in classic Greek, but Kurosawa's version of classic Greek drama. Star Wars is such a bastard mutt of a film series.

Lucas had written several pre attempts but as you say, other bits may have influenced his works but nothing they had was anywhere near what he was looking for. It's a lot like Jobs and the touch screen. Sure the technology existed but how it was put together is Jobs.
I remember reading what Jodorowsky wanted to do, Lynch's version is infinitely better.
AVP was supposed to be dumb shit, Prometheus I expected more from. Ultimately, AVP was more fun to watch.
