From what I can gather it was either some problem with collusion in the games industry with bad games getting good reviews and people been tricked into buying shit or a rage storm over a girl sleeping with a ton of guys in order to get good reviews. Gamergate got us some redditfags for whom cripplechan was too much for some reason. Fappening was a bigger thing, I've used to peek on Sup Forums from time to time and ever since 90% of threads there were datamining or just super-normie "post pics of ur ex lol" kind of threads.
A girl "dev" slept with few journalists for publicity and got caught red handed. Sup Forums used it to spin it against games' journalism while journalists kept saying that it's all about harassing said "dev".
