How well-known is this guy in your country? If they know of him do people believe he really went to the moon or are there a lot of people like in America that believe it was faked?

Yea sadly, we have a lot of such morons too. But they are a minority.

Pretty much any high school graduate knows his name and no, there's not any significant number of conspiracy nuts here, at least not on that vein.

He's well known here but in general Germans consider the achievements and contributions of the Soviet Union more influential, similar to the contributions to WWII.

This is obviously a guy from the ex-DDR. The American space program accomplished way more than the Soviet one. There has never even been a cosmonaut who went out of low earth orbit. They never successfully sent a space probe anywhere but Venus and the Moon while NASA has sent probes to every planet in the Solar System.

In my opinion the Russians accomplished quite a bit early on, but after Gagarin's flight NASA started edging out, especially post-Lunar landing with Skylab and the SST

Not well known, I think Laika and Gagarin are more easily recognizable. And even if they do know about Armstrong, no one would doubt he actually went to the moon.
