I had the same reaction at about the same age. I think that was the intention of the scene, and it was a nice, relatively non-hamfisted way of establishing the character as a cool-headed, experienced soldier without having him pull off some lame 80s action movie stunt.

Also Alien and Aliens are commentary on social / family interactions.
In Alien Dallas is the father-figure, MU-TH-ER is the mother-figure, Parker and Brett are weirdo uncles that the family sees on holidays and so forth.
It's all dysfuntional and grim and shit because of late 70s angst and then the father-figure dies making it even more grim while in Aliens Hicks is the obvious father figure (eat your cornbread, it's good for you) and the fucking archetype for the nuclear family survives the movie.
Also the MU-TH-ER room in Alien is stylised after a church, all the lights looking like candles.

but i agree, the intire movie would have to be different for it to work if both of them are still alive when they crash on the planet.
hicks with his wounds would have spend half the movie in the medical wing.
